Hello guys.

I couldn't find any documentation on this online. I have a new musical production coming up and I'm trying to think how I'm going to trigger snapshots in the DiGiCo S21 from our QLab session. Since the S21 console doesn't have MIDI IN how can I set this up? Thru USB from the mac to the console? If so how can I configure a program change? Just assign the snapshot button on the console and it will appear on my QLab preferences window? Please Help :)

Cheers, Pedro

from what I've found so far.... the S21 doesn't support any remote controlling... MIDI or otherwise.
matter of fact, it's got network ports on it, that it doesn't appear you can do anything with either... - rather frustrating.

I'm still digging though.

:/ That sucks, thanks for the help. I'm realizing it's a Great mixer really easy to use. The same way DiGiCo has made all of their mixers.. but man... not controlling these parameters it's a real pain..

I'd imagine that they will open it up to an OSC protocol once they write the iPad app to control them as they did with the SD series.

I think the best solution will be to change the Console, but first check if it supports IN MIDI.
I've used all the Yamaha models without any problem.
It even built a MIDI "trigger" to control and trigger (via MIDI or OSC) the QLAB.

In the early days of S21 I've heard that it should accept a generic midi interface thru one of the usb ports... But probably not supported in the software yet. But nothing confirmed from a official source...

I know this is less the ideal but if you can't change desk. How about the gpio ports? I don't have an s21 to play with but I would guess much like the SD desk, the GPIO are linked to macros.

Qlab to midi solution to gpio. Opp needs to make sure the s21 is in the right snapshot, but it should track through the show.

Or if you have less playback cues. Fire qlab with the S21 via midi solution and gpio.

Yeah the S21 doesn't accept Midi at the moment, which to me seems like a large thing missing for theatre applications. Funny, I was being shown it by the head of a very reputable hire company, and when I asked what they thought about the lack of midi, they hadn't even noticed and had to check the back of the console before realising it wasn't there. OSC surely has to be integrated, both for firing scenes and snapshots, but also triggering Qlab directly from the desk, something we all like to do! (Of course there are almost no physical buttons to do so with)

I thought this was a bit weird so I asked DiGiCo (I bought a D1 Live a few years ago so still have a couple of contacts in the phone). Support for class-compliant USB MIDI interfaces is in the pipeline, but not implemented yet.

I’m afraid you’re going to need 2 GO buttons for now I think – one for the desk, and one for QLab.

A little off topic but I have been wondering how to implement the GPIO relays on our SD9. Can anyone post a link to any useful info?

I don’t have access to a desk, but a quick search for GPI in http://www.digico.org/DiGiCo_Manuals/SD_Software_Reference_V2.pdf would suggest that you (for example) create a macro to fire next and then assign it to a GPI – or store the GPO state in the snapshots. (GPIs can fire macros, GPOs can be switched on and off; hardware info in http://www.digico.org/DiGiCo_Manuals/SD9_Getting_Started.pdf.)

Thanks Rich,
I am familiar with all the DiGiCo literature and know how to implement the use of GPIO in the console and within snapshots etc.. What I am lacking I guess is a basic understanding of GPIO stuff outside of the console that the manuals assume you already know. Is it just a simple relay? Can I attach any old relay or is there a specific device/interface needed aside from the console? I have tried googling this but it definitely didn't clear anything up as far as interfacing with a DiGiCo goes.

Then you probably want http://digico.org/downloads/support/TB112.pdf. GPIs will trigger when the contact is made. GPOs are single pole single throw switches that can be closed. I’m not 100% sure from that document whether they output a voltage – which I think those on a DME64N do – or whether you’d need to take one of the 5V outputs and route it through a GPO. I’m sure DiGiCo would send you a circuit diagram of how to wire what you need if you ask…

We built a custom panel for our DMEs that showed a light when it detected signal (to confirm which DME was active in a redundant setup) and allowed push-button triggering of a mobile phone announcement wav. We also had a mute button and a “solo delay fills” button for sound checks.

I’ve attached a section of the DME manual to show how their GPIO can be used.

Thanks Rich,
I have also seen this sheet before, and that is what started my confusion. The back of the SD9 has a 1/4" jack for GPI and one for GPO. Looking at the sheet there are a whole wack of pin numbers so I thought maybe I was missing a piece of gear. The GPI/GPO are actually in the desk? And I can just connect them to whatever the heck I want?? Your Yamaha has little barrier strips? And you just wire that right to your light and button?

Sorry, I haven’t been looking at specific desks in detail. It looks like the SD9 has 2 GPI & 2 GPO on jacks, whereas the SD7 has 16 of each on DSUBs – and there is an option for 32. The DME64N has them on Euroblocks. Sonifex appear to make something that has them on RJ45s…

The point of a general purpose input/output is that it is, well, general purpose. Your SD9 GPIs should take a footswitch quite happily, for example.

Not sure if anyone will see this, but there is a new update for S21 V 2.2 which apparently allows cue lab to fire Scenes on desk via ethernet.
Im looking to get info on this at present before i have to bash it out on the desk as ill have limited time.

Hope this helps someone out and ope someone is able to fill me in on the blanks before I get my hands dirty.

Cheers

Hi,
With the last release on S21 is possible to use OSC to control potentially every part of the desk.
If you need to recall snapshot/cue you can send an OSC integer message: /digico/snapshots/fire n (n is the snapshot number).

Cheers

You have to enable the external control on S21 (like you’re using an iPad) and send the OSC message via Qlab on the proper address/port.
I’ve run the system in this way, with Qlab and other time with Companion software.

You can ask to your local distributor or (like me) you can “grab” strings with an osc reader and an iPad.
