Hi All,

I'm wondering if there is any way to extract or print the cue notes so
that they can be printed off. Currently printing from QLab seems to just
print an image of the cue list...

Kind Regards
Paul Baker

Definitely something to add to the manual since just about anyone using
QLab for very long will need to hand in homework:)

I think that it would be a fantastic addition to QLab to export a pdf cue sheet.  In fact, I think that this could be one of the most useful new features that could be added.  It's not very glamorous, but it's could save designers all kinds of busywork time that's better devoted to the more creative aspects of designing.

As it is right now, I usually spot a script for cues and create a cue list in Excel that can be shared with the director, stage manager, and others if necessary  Then I go into QLab and spend more time essentially recreating that cue list in QLab.  I would love nothing better than to sit down with a script and QLab and enter all of the information that needs to be shared with the director as a pdf, and simultaneously be building my QLab cue list.  And any changes made to the cue list would then be reflected in the cue sheet pdf.

I think that in order to do it right would require a bit more than simply printing out the cue list with notes.  There's information in a cue sheet that doesn't usually appear in a dedicated QLab field (page number, trigger description), and stuff in the QLab cue list that's unnecessary to include in a cue sheet (prewait, target, auto continued cues).  Maybe the addition of a viewing option in which the cue list is presented as a "Cue Sheet" would be cool (essentially looking like an excel spreadsheet).  The separate view might be nice in order to offer some WYSIWYG formatting tools for the PDF while not messing up the current Cue List view.  Also, perhaps some of the real estate that's presently used by the "Notes" field in the "info" tab of the inspector could be split into a few more short fields (page number, trigger description).  The interface for this type of thing could be a long conversation, because I don't think you'd want to add too much (if anything) to the current cue list window.

Again, it's not exactly a glamorous feature, but it could be an amazing work flow enhancement to the entire design process.

Adding new features to software is so easy when you don't have to do the programming.

Until the print option is updated, may I suggest that the Qlab help
section state something like,

"Until the print function of Qlab is expanded, to print your entire cue
list in full, highlight the information, copy & then paste into your
favorite spreadsheet. This will get you the information in nice tab-
delimited format."

What ever is decided, also add it to the PDF & HTML version on the website.

In the mean time, it sure seems like it would be easy to write a script
that does the following,

highlight current cue list
copy
open "open office spreadsheet"
paste
hotkey trigger =
...

If you do use open office, there is a PDF button on the tool bar.

If I'm not mistaken, Jason Tratta has something in the works that will kick some ass this way.

Do the things that please you, and do them well.

It's true, I have a paperwork app in the works as well.  I was finally able to get back to it recently, the data import from Qlab is done.  However, it turns out making pretty print outs is hard...especially if your new to coding..like me.  Learning as fast as I can...maybe I can get something together after the holiday.  No promises though...haha...busy busy.

If it helps in the meantime, I wrote this script in such a way that
you can batch create as much or as little of the QLab programming from
an Excel spreadsheet as you wish:

http://figure53.com/wiki/index.php?title=Script_-_make_cues_from_a_text_file

For example, if your Excel cue list has numbers and descriptions in it
then you can easily generate a whole bunch of Group Cues ready to
populate with sounds.

In the opposite direction, this script can spit out as much or as
little information as you want from a QLab workspace ready for Excel,
depending on what you feed it:

http://figure53.com/wiki/index.php?title=Script_-_make_a_text_file_from_cues

As far as I know, they both work OK.

Why not just use the copy and paste function into a spreadsheet? Then you can format as needed for a given production. I would guess that no two production companies use the same format. Plus I would also guess that most shows (non pro) do not need published cue lists.
With two days of tech we barely get a script marked up.

Hi Folks

Firstly, Merry Christmas to all on the list!

OK, so to business.

Having got Panto up and running this year (Peter Pan - Thank God for
Qlab that is running video & sound over 4 macs!) I'm now thinking about
next year, and the possibility of running some 3d imagery from equipment
using the good old red/blue glasses. So my question is this - does
anyone have any ideas of software that will be able to assist in the
creation of this? I'd love to go to polarised systems, but guess that's
a very specialist area.

Any thought either on or off list would be great.

Have a good one!!

Hey Richard,

Yeah - I figured my original post wasn't long enough, so I had to add some more right away.

Rich,

I'll be interested to check out that script.  Cool use of the scripting feature.

Steve,

My whole "dream scenario" is to eliminate any redundant effort and have it all built into QLab.  That might seem supremely lazy, but time is always short, and this is exactly the sort of problem for which computers can provide an elegant solution that is effortless for the user.  While not all projects may require paperwork, it's often helpful (if not necessary) to communicate "the plan" with the director early on and then the stage manager for tech.

Most of the data is already present in QLab, but there are some tweaks that would be necessary to work with it in a "page view" fashion.  QLab is a fantastic tool the execution part of the design, but the "imagining" part of the design process is equally important (if not more so), and I think that QLab is in a great position to become a useful tool for that portion of the process as well.

This is how I print my cue sheets if I ever too. Not sure why its needed to be built into QLab. I save leaving the formatting to Excel and the audio/video playback to QLab.
