Hoping this reaches someone with answers:

I'm having trouble playing back video in QLab on my projector. Every time it plays back the video is very choppy. Not sure exactly what's going on. It worked fine last week, but suddenly all videos are very choppy and skip.

I've tried playing the video using Quicktime and going full screen and it works just fine. It sonly skipping/choppy when played through QLab.

I'm using the brand new Mac Mini with the M1 chip and 16g of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Mike,

It’s hard to say without knowing more about the video file and setup, but here’s one possible fix.  If you haven’t yet, look at this link and follow the steps to optimize you Mac for playback.  OSX has all sorts of things it does on it’s own that eat up resources and this helps you make your machine more streamlined.

Hope that helps.

It's doing it to all videos, but the one I'm using for testing is Apple ProRes 422 Proxy. This is the strangest thing I've ever had happen with QLab. Never had this problem before.

Hi again,

Is this a problem that started with your new Mini?  Or did you update the operating system recently?  What is your interface for connecting the projector?

How do you connect the projector? Directly?

We had bad experiences with choppy video only when we connected the projector via a hdmi-over-cat5e-network-cable transmitter/receiver pair. Seems like the transmitter was a bit too slow …

Hi Mike,

I also noticed this new trouble... since I upgrade my Mac to Big Sur.
It seems te be codec-indepedant, but I got a project with only ProRes 442 videos that were fluent before and now, a little bit choppy.
I checked everything in QLab and in the Mac, and also in activity monitor...
If I play the videos with VLC everything is fine!

Hope that it'll be fixed soon :-)

Hi,
I'm experiencing the same thing. I'll go into detail a bit:
I'm using a MacMini controlled via OSC to playout video on 2 projectors. All Videos are 1920x1080 ProRes 422 LT or Proxy.
My MacMini i7, late 2014, 16GB Ram, Big Sur, runs one video smoothly. When I start a second video everything get's choppy.
My MacMini i5, late 2014, 16GB Ram, Catalina, in the exact same position and setup plays 2 videos smoothly.

So my guess is actually Big Sur too, that's why I came to the forum. Does anyone have some Big Sur experience?

Hi Julian,

First thing to check is that you are using the current version of QLab, which is 4.6.10:

If that does not help, please email us at sup...@figure53.com with as many details as possible.

thanks!

Hi Mikes,

Yes I'm using QLab 4.6.10. I just tried with 4.6.9 today, it seems a little better, but no completely fluent.
I use a MacBook Pro Retina, 15'' mid 2014, that has everydays rocks for videos.
I first suspected Big Sur, but... if I play these videos with VLC, everything is fine!
I had time to perform deeper tests, I'll be back later :-)
