Hi all,

I'm a Stage Manager who is fairly new to Qlab. I've used it to call shows, but not build out the sound design myself.

I'm using my MacBook Pro, and connected it to the soundboard via USB B to USB C last night and everything was playing nicely through it. However, for some reason I cannot control the audio levels of any of the tracks through Qlab. I have to use the faders on the board which I obviously don't want to do.

I'm sure it's something wrong I've done with the setup of the software, or an audio setting on my laptop? I don't know.

Could anyone please give me pointers?

Here is what it looks like under the sliders in qlab in case that helps...

IMG_2629.JPG

And the settings for the soundboard device on my laptop... I'm unable to move any of the sliders in these settings.

Thank you in advance!

EDIT - I just realized I can't control the volume for the tracks in Qlab at all. It's nothing to do with the soundboard. When I just play through the laptop, the qlab sliders don't do anything. What am I missing!

It looks from the picture like the inspector window at the bottom just needs to be resized to reveal the faders. Right in the middle of the horizontal divider that separates the inspector at the bottom with the cuelist above is a small oval dot. Grab it with your mouse pointer and drag up, and you should find the faders you’re looking for, and be able to adjust them. Once you’ve revealed them, you should be able to make the tab smaller again without hiding the faders.

Hi Mark, sorry for confusion. I know where the faders are, and can move them up and down. What I'm saying is that it doesn't do anything. Moving the faders does nothing to the volume of the audio tracks.

Hello

Do you have the Cue currently playing audio selected?

If you select an Audio cue and press V to preview it, QLab won’t go to the next cue like GO (space bar) would do.

You need to select the right Cue to be able to edit it. You’ll find a play icon next to the Cue in playback.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Not sure we're talking about the same thing.

I can play tracks, I can hear tracks. What I can't do is control their volume via the Qlab volume faders. I can only control it manually/physically on the sound board.

Ahhhhh. Gotcha. Sorry - without knowing the specific level of someone’s QLab experience, it’s hard to know how basic to start with troubleshooting.

If you’re set on the correct output (which you are if you’re hearing audio through the system), and you’re adjusting the faders for the cue that’s playing, and not the one that’s on deck (a common mistake I see students make), a video demonstrating the problem might be useful. In my experience, it rarely has anything to do with the audio/midi settings on the Mac, as long as you’re not creating/using an aggregate device. So I’d stay in QLab first as you try to suss out the problem.

Did you build this sequence from scratch, or import from QLab 4? Is there any reason why there might be custom routing programmed into the Audio Output Patch Editor? That’s in the workspace settings, and allows you to customize output routing.

Ugh man. What an idiot. I wasn't selecting the correct track when changing the volume.

I'm embarrased. I apologize.

hello

I tried to illustrate this in this small video.

1. If I select the first audio Cue and do a GO, the Cue will play but goes to the next one. So what you see is the parameter of the selected cue, not the one playing.

You’ll have to go back to the one playing by selecting it or using the up arrow.

2. Further I use the V shortcut to preview the audio Cue. QLab doesn’t go to the next one when using the preview option.

You can see the audio modulation in the fader and can edit the level.

Please note that the audio levels are not designed to be edited or tweaked live. You’ll have to use fade Cue if you want to change the volume of your audio Cue, Or the mixing board.

Matt, it’s a more common mistake than you might think! If you’re not used to building in QLab it takes a little mental adjustment to realize that the cue you’re hearing and the cue that is highlighted aren’t the same. It makes sense from a cue execution standpoint - it’s more critical to be able to quickly identify which cue is going to fire when you push the GO button than it is to know which cue is already playing or has played.

The V key is your friend - it will fire the cue you have highlighted, but not advance the playhead, so you can play a cue and immediately adjust levels. Spacebar is what you wanna use when firing a sequence of cues.
