fade cue will not fade all cues with previous 'group'

I've created a small series of cues, really the same sound cue overlapping a bit over and over, that I put into a group and then put a loop at the end of the group.

in a later cue i want to fade the entire group down a bit but not out.

It doesn't work.

what happens is when I fire the fade cue it WILL fade down the file that is playing within the group WHEN the fade is running. however, when it moves on to the next file within the group the volume level moves right back to it's original position and not to where I set it with the fade.

when setting up the fade cue I dragged the line at the top of the group and landed it on to of the fade cue and it is connected correctly.

any ideas?
