Hello friends

As previously discussed on this list, there is a bug in all versions of macOS 12.2 and newer that prevents QLab’s video effects from working when used on a Mac containing an M1 Max processor. A follow-on to this issue is that when using a system that exhibits this problem, opening a workspace that contains any Video cues which ever used video effects renders those cues broken and un-fixable.

While we do not believe we can fix the underlying problem of video effects not working on these systems, we believe that this beta release addresses the un-fixable Video cue problem by changing the way that video effects are disabled when their checkboxes are unchecked.

Using that version, which we believe to be stable and show-ready, a Video, Camera, or Text cue which uses video effects should successfully un-break when the video effects’ checkboxes are unchecked, even when the workspace is being used on an M1 Max-based Mac running macOS 12.2 or newer.

Needless to say, this whole situation is a bummer. We can’t fix the underlying problem, and because it’s related to passé video architecture, I think it’s plausible that Apple won’t fix it either. If you use video effects in QLab 4, either keep your OS version below 12.2 or avoid using Macs with M1 Max (and probably M1 Ultra) processors.

The good news is that this problem does not appear in QLab 5 since QLab 5 uses a Metal-based video engine, so whenever QLab 5 is released (release date is still: "when it’s good and ready”), this problem will have a more actively available solution.

If anyone out there using M1 Max-based Macs with macOS 12.2 is able to confirm that this beta does what it says on the tin, we would be most appreciative. If we don’t hear anything to delay it, the beta will be released as 4.6.12 in something like two weeks.

Best
Sam

Thanks to the QLab team.
While I am not using the OS or processors specified, I do appreciate the effort put into this.
