Using the video playback in Qlab 3 for the first time ever. I'd been on the audio side of it for a long time and it was time to finally get going with video. Hoping someone could help with what seems like a basic question.

Video playback and video fades are working great. Everything seems to default to fade to or from black, which I understand would be the natural default. In this case I am fading in and out of an video clip that's on a white background and we want all of the transitions between a handful of video clips to always be on white and fade in and out of white instead of black. We want to video to essentially seem continuous even though it's going to be broken into a handful of clips that are triggered in time with a live music performance. It's pretty straightforward really. If I can get the video fades to be white and fade to white instead of black we will be set. Any pointing me in the right direction appreciated. I'll be doing more and more video with it in the future, so these are my baby steps with video in Qlab3.

At the beginning of your cue list, add a video cue with a white image as its target. Set that cue's layer to "bottom", and leave it active, i.e. don't stop it. Then, as you fade cues in and out on higher layers, they'll reveal the white layer, giving you the result you're looking for.

It also might be helpful to change the background of that desktop to white in case you need to panic during the show.

Are you using a video screen or projecting into a surface? The approach would be essentially the same either way, as long as you understand how Qlab handles video surfaces. When there is no video being played the projector/screen will just show the desktop background for that surface.

If you're using a video screen, just set your desktop background to white. That way whenever you stop a video or fade its opacity to 0 the screen will show white (or a fade to white). The best part of this is that you won't have to keep a still white "video" playing all of the time. It will also ensure that if Qlab crashes completely you will still be left with a blank white screen.

If you are using a projector and a white surface the best thing might be to set your secondary display to black, which is essentially no output to the projector (though there might still be some light being projected, depending on the projector. Fading to/from black in this situation will still leave you with a white surface.

Thanks all. Seems easy to see the answer typed out here. The show went great and the client was very happy. I've had my first dip into the video pool with QLab and am very happy. I'll be using it for video playback for at least two more shows this week. What was also great is that everything went quickly as well as perfectly, so the client was made comfortable right from the get go. Invaluable. Plenty of other things we had to turn our attention to, nice to not have to worry about video. Much appreciation for the help from the list. I just needed one nudge in the right direction.
