Hi,

Is there any simple (cheaper) alternative way to achieve the Read Only mode of Qlab Remote on an ipad?

This is the only function I need to enable the artist to see exactly what is playing.

Yes, I could run a second monitor but I'd like to put it onto his Ipad screen because it mounts neater into the drumkit.

I could look at programming something with TouchOSC or similar, I'm just trying not to reinvent the wheel if the solution already exists.

Thanks for any help,

Peter

Hi Peter,

One of the updates we are planning for QLab 4.2 is an update to QLab Remote.

We expect to make the Read Only / View Only mode free, and then make other features available as In-App Purchases.

We do not yet have a specific release date for 4.2, but it is currently in alpha testing.

Hope that helps,
C

That's excellent news Chris.

If you need a Alpha test volunteer before out first show next week, I'd be happy to put my name forward!

Cheers,

Peter

How about a screen sharing app on the iPad - Screens, VNC, etc. (there are many). You can set many of these up to be view only.

Sometimes I use RealVNC on a Motion Computing R12 which has been used for various remote control things.
The weakest point of remote controlling will be the quality of the WiFi connection. Cheap WAPs will work, but not dependably or fast. Low bandwidth, or inability to compete with other RF may end up with missed cues.
The best I've used was the Ruckus Zoneflex 7700 series of outdoor WAPs. New ones are two or three thousand dollars, but work extremely well in the worst RF environments. Have used a 7762 Worldwide, even in football stadiums with over a hundred other active WAPs.

Yeah the connection definitely makes a difference, especially if there's a very big crowd. For viewing only it seems like a pretty easy alternative if in the given venue there's not a lot of interference and a good WAP. You could always hardwire it (even with an iPad) if there's a wired ethernet connection nearby.

Is a screen sharing app set in view only mode likely to have any impact on the performance of the Qlab Macbook?

Are there any known issues to running VNC or similar with Qlab?

Thanks,

Peter

Answering my own question for the benefit of anyone else searching for the same thing...

There is a free app called Lab Monkey available in the app store. It gives a very simple, very basic display of the selected cue and the active cue. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for the other feedback people have given.

We have a free app out that acts as a monitor for your QLab Cues.

Excited to see QLab's new remote 4.2 also, they are constantly improving :)
