Looking at options to remote control QLab with a (close to) invisible device from stage. The full show is pre-programmed in QLab including sound, vids and lights. Running tests in the theatre shows no problems.

However, the cues need to be triggered from stage by an actor participating in the show.
- I know about QLab Remote off course. However, handling an iPad and even an iPhone on stage is not considered an option (device too big).
- I know about Audio Apre Pro, but this set up is considered too expensive (for now).

What other low budget, yet reliable, options can you recommend?

Thx in advance
C

Hi C

While I have no specific recommendations, I do want to say that generally speaking, there really is no such thing as a device that is wireless, low budget, and reliable.

You can have wireless and reliable, but not low budget.
You can have wireless and low budget, but not reliable.
You can have low budget and reliable, but not wireless.

Of course, both reliability and budget are ranges, not points, so it’s certainly possible that you can find something that fits your requirements, but I did want to sort of put this concept out there as the topic gets discussed.

Best
Sam

Hi Sam,

Fully understand and agree. However, an investment of $749 for Audio Ape Pro, for a show that runs for two weeks is too big. And I can’t get my hands on one here in the Netherlands without buying it.

Hence the question for a low budget option. Or better said: a LOWER budget option than $749.

Although using a 30 euro presentation remote is not recommended (although for very small venues with very small audiences with very little stray RF you may get it to work reliably at short distances from your computer), you should be able to hire a proper large conference remote, like a Dsan Perfect Cue, in the Netherlands from any event company specialising in large conferences for around  100 euros per week.

Extenders give you significantly more distance to connect peripherals like keyboards, mouse,

interactive whiteboards and game controllers.

I believe that extending usb connection is an alternative.

You can use mini keyboard or even use midi.

The extenders can be used with CATx cabling and even with single-mode or multimode fibers. Several USB extenders offer distances from 85 to 100 m, depending on your equipment and cabling, with some reaching 500 m to 10 km.

To use a USB extender, connect your transmitter to a USB port on your device. Connect one end of a CATx or fiber cable to the other end of the transmitter. Use a standard USB cable to connect your peripheral device and the extender receiver. Connect the other end of the CATx or fiber cable to the converted port on the receiver.

I've been using radiotransmitters from this Danish guy last years. https://www.facebook.com/musalk/
Never had any problem with them. The batteries seem to last many years and the range is good enough also for larger venues.
Send him a mail and request whatever keystroke you like. I think each receiver can handle 8 or maybe 10 separate transmitters and they come with one or two buttons.

My experience with Bluetooth extenders isn´t the best.
I bought myself one of these https://aircable.co/shop/product/acc1615-aircable-host-xr5-85 but never used it for any live events, simply because it didn't show clearly in any way that it was actually working. I guess it was, but with no clear visual feedback I couldn´t  trust it enough.

Johan, do you know what those transmitters cost?

I have bullt and used several systems using the one-button type of transmitters shown on the Musalk site.  They have generally been pretty reliable on stage if I am careful about
antenna placement, clearing their freq, keeping antenna cable lengths short and keeping line of sight between TX and RX antenna clear.  They are not the sort
of mil-spec high-tech device Audio Ape is.   The spread spectrum thing looks like the future for this kind of rig, and when I need this sort of capability again for a show I’m doing
I will probably go with Audio Ape over my own builds.

If I remember correctly one receiver and two transmitters are included in a ”startpack” and I think that cost me roundabout 160 USD

Do you know how these compare in reliability to the Dsan PerfectCue line?

Up to 200m with free line in urban environment. Recommends use below 100m free line.
However, there may be some buildings where all RF equipment does not work reliably due to the building construction.

So when it comes to range I guess they are comparable if not better.
Dsans range is 300 feet , which equals 91.44 meters.

And the very obvious comparison - they are a whole lot less ugly....
