I have been using QLab to control audio and video for some time now but just with amateur groups so no big budgets unfortunately. I am intrigued at the possibility of adding the ability to control lighting but before stumping up the money I would like to see what is involved. Can anyone suggest a simple and cheap USB adapter that would work with QLab to enable it to connect to DMX? Also is there is Dummies Guide to getting started as it looks a bit intimidating, far more so than audio and video.
Thanks

Hello Chris

QLab 4 does not support USB DMX adapters at this time. However, we are adding support for four specific USB DMX adapters in QLab 4.1 which we hope to release soon.

The four models are the ENTTEC DMX USB Pro, the ENTTEC DMX USB Pro Mk2, the DMXking ultraDMX RDM Pro, and the DMXking ultraDMX Micro.

There is no “dummies guide”, but there is a step by step tutorial video which might help you out. They are oriented towards using Art-net devices, since that’s what QLab supports at this moment.

You can find it here:

To piggyback in this topic... is there any tested or recommended ArtNet to DMX interface that might be an alternative to USB?

Hi Christopher

We’ve tested QLab with Art-net boxes made by Enttec, DMXking, and Pathway and found they all work.

I use an Enttec ODE personally and have had no trouble with it.

Hey Chris, since we're talking about small budgets, I've recently used an Arduino based ArtNet interface with QLab. Other than having to broadcast the packets, everything worked properly. You might want to check it out: http://blog.deskontrol.net/arduino-based-dmx-artnet-node/

I will be waiting for this feature as well. Our community theatre is already set up with the ENTTEC adaptors for use with other 'free' or low cost lighting interfaces. Like thge original poster I have used QLab for Audio and video and really want to dig into lights with it. Being able to use the setup we already have at the theatre would likely be the element to push me over the top and dive into lights with QLab.

I'll definitely be watching for this!

Thanks for the information. Looks like I will need to wait for 4.1

Thanks Bruno, this is something I will definitely look into as I use Arduinos on a regular basis.

Hello Chris, Sam and anyone else who can help:

has anyone tried running
QLab 4.1 OS 10.12, interface DMXking ultraDMX Micro successfully?

Iʻm running QLab 4.1.4 on OS 10.11.6, interface DMXking ultraDMX Micro.
as everyone here knows, OS 10.11 does not work without some Terminal-based commands; iʻm not sure how to go about that, so iʻm wondering if upgrading to 10.12 is going to help.

Hello Kahana

QLab 4.1 and later supports the DMXking ultraDMX Micro and we have tested it successfully. Are you having trouble with yours? If so, can you describe the problem with some detail?

I’m a little perplexed by your statement about not being able to use macOS 10.11 without some Terminal commands… can you elaborate on that a little, please? As far as I’m aware, no Terminal commands are absolutely necessary to use any version of macOS.
