TouchOsc will send either midi or osc straight out to qlab without going near max or even OSC for all the basic commands.
There is an editor so you can build your TouchOsc file with a set of buttons and midi messages before trnsferring it to phone or pad and then get qlab to learn the messages. I have an old touchosc file with simple Go/stop buttons which i could pass on.

I cant see what Max is doing but maybe its a midi/osc to qwerty converter allowing midi to control the free version
of qlab - the same thing can be done with an old mac prog called "midi stroke" which I use to introduce performers to
qlabs possibilities - once they see they could use effects they want to buy qlab
