How many universes if using network art net?

I have checked the forum and documentation and can't get a clear answer to how many universes I can run via QLab lighting. It says UNLIMITED DMX in the specs. So does that mean with a USB Network dongle out of my MacBook Pro (USB-C) connect to a ETC node via ethernet to the lighting boards IP, I can run 15 universes at once?

So exciting to be back out in the world and doing shows again!!! I have had to watch several of my QLab tutorials to remind myself of how this all works ;-)

Hi Mark

QLab itself has no limits to the number of DMX universes you can use in a workspace, so in theory you can use up to the maximum number of universes possible in an Art-net 3 system which is 32,768 universes, or 16.7 million addresses.

That said, we do not have any testing data on how QLab performs with large numbers of universes in use, so I cannot promise that it will be perfectly smooth sailing if you’re planning something as elaborate and fabulous as you usually are planning. I myself have never used more than two universes with QLab, and never anywhere close to the full 1024 addresses that two universes adds up to.

But indeed, QLab has no hard limit. If you patch it, they will cue.

So helpful. The gig I am thinking of has 12 universes, but barely uses any of the channels. I'll let you know how it goes.

Long day of teching. Two different venues the same day.

Was trying to control a ETC Element 2. I had OSC fire cue control from QLab and pinging the system was successful. The system is set up for sACN and never worked; so does that mean I can't use QLab to run lights via the network if it is sACN. Looks like QLab only works with ArtNet™ (and DMX)?

Thanks for the help. I have all day tomorrow to try and get this working, but the good news is OSC is ready to go if I need it.

That is correct. QLab supports Art-Net and selected USB DMX dongles.

Hi Mark

In addition to what Chris said, I want to make sure we’re all talking about the same thing… you said:

> Was trying to control a ETC Element 2. I had OSC fire cue control from QLab and pinging the system was successful. The system is set up for sACN and never worked.

That’s two different things entirely there… controlling the Element with OSC is completely unrelated to directly sending DMX levels out of QLab using Art-net or a USB-DMX interface. In the first case, the Element is the lighting controller. In the second case, QLab is the lighting controller and the Element isn’t involved at all.

Cheers
