I'm looking for a recommendation of a robust and reliable usb -> midi interface to use with Qlab.

I've been using one built in to an audio interface, but we're moving the audio to Dante, but need to keep the midi on standard midi cables not over ip (because of some legacy gear)

I just need 1 in and 1 out port.

I would have thought anything would work, but we've found that an inexpensive usb->midi built into a cable that we have chokes when there are more then a few message in a short period of time...

continuing to use the audio interface just for midi is not an option, it's being re-purposed elsewhere...

Thanks!

Andy

Hi Andy

I have been using the Motu Fastlane for a while now.
with the A/B button we have made a running backup system so we can switch MIDI from main to backup without loosing a beat…

+1

Just using for basic MIDI connect, but never had a problem with them.

I have 3 of these. Tiny, no software to install. Simple LED feedback. Even works on a Hog via usb.

I am using OSC with a spectacular and  free  software called Multicontrol. I'm also using a controller (joystick) usb game.
MULTI also can connect via MIDI.
Sadly do not have the manual Multicontrol. I taught myself.

You'll find that happens with a lot of interfaces, even name brand,
and even more so if you send SysEx or MTC. M-Audio interfaces are
particularly bad about this. While I've generally been cautious about
MOTU's audio interfaces, I so far have not had troubles with their
dedicated MIDI hardware.

The older Roland UM series were fantastic and one of the few that
reliably sent/received MTC for a long time. They've discontinued the
"box" style units, but still sell the UM-ONE cable unit, which I
haven't tested as extensively, but is supposed to use the same
chipset.

I have tested the iConnectivity mio cabled unit and iConnectMidi2+,
and they both work quite well.

I'm supposed to be getting a couple of the ESI interfaces to test, but
haven't yet, so I can't vouch for them firsthand. That said, I spoke
with their hardware designer, and he assures me they use a much more
current MCU than units like the M-Audio, and have absolutely no
trouble with MTC or long SysEx messages.

Hope this helps!
