I am thinking about using MIDI for my theatre. I'm the stage manager
and also make-shift sound designer as well. I am also my own board ops
for both sound and lights. Thinking about making things a little
easier. But I want to do a little research before I discuss this with
upper management.
I am looking for a MIDI USB cable that is cheap but gives good
performance between light board and Mac. I have a Macbook Pro (10.5.8
OS); QLab 2.3 (build 1135), has pro audio, but not pro MIDI yet; Light
board: ETC, Express 24/48 with MIDI IN, OUT & THRU ports.
Suggestions? Thoughts?
Thanks,
--Adam

Have you encountered any problems? Even minor?

I use it and like it, however, recently I _have_ encountered a problem that is yet unresolved, and from all the tests I did (going into other, monitored, midi-in ports), it should _not_ be the Uno, but...
Ok, it's like this, I used it last year to trigger a (borrowed) ETC Express 48/96, worked like a charm.
This year, I tried it on our own ETC Express 24/48, to no avail. The Uno was able to receive MIDI commands from the console, but the console did not react to any signals (whether the prescribed MIDI msges nor the MSC msges).
However, I've tested the Uno with another, monitored MIDI device, and it records and shows dutifully all messages, which is why I suspect it's not the Uno.
For the record though, I was able to get the console to respond to that other device (the MIDI port of my Edirol UA-25) without any issues, which is the way I went for the show.
So far, the only idea that the nice guy at ETC support had was some difference in the hardware revision of the two consoles, but that is yet to be determined - if you're interested, I can keep you up to date on the outcome (had to track down the serial number of the 48/96 as a reference).
Cheers,
Freddy

Thanks for the info.
I'd love for you to keep me up-to-date if you can. Right now MIDI is
just an idea. I'm not going to totally invest in it, especially now if
you have had this problem.
As for the Edirol interface. What is this doing better that the MIDI
cable is not? And, I'm not sure if that would be in our budget. It is
just a little too pricey.
Forgive me I'm a Stage Manger by trade, so some of this might go over
my head at first! Your tutelage is very appreciated!

I see the Maudio / Midiman Midisport 2x2s (bigger brother to the UNO) go
on ebay for less than $20 frequently. Having a second port never hurts &
if one isn't working, having a spare is a great trouble shooting device.
If it doesn't work with either one, it's probably something else.
I personally like the MOTU Fastlane because it passes power along to
connected midi devices (I use a bunch of Midi Solutions stuff). The
Midisport 2x2 doesn't seem to pass power. Not sure about the Uno.
I haven't had problems with either of these 3 devices.
