I recently read an article where someone bought an ethernet switch and was able to connect 5 computers to it to control 5 different video projectors via MIDI through ethernet. How easy is this?

What settings will I need and what Cue from the toolbox will I need? The article said MSC. I'm hoping to make this as easy as possible before I tackle it. Thanks.

Check out ipMIDI, a free utility for doing MIDI over ethernet which is often easier to set up than Apple's built-in version.

Once the computers are talking to each other it's pretty straightforward. QLab responds to MSC messages, so you can use MSC Cues to control the remote computers.

e.g. send a GO message with a Q number that matches a cue number in the remote workspace, and it will play that cue.

Chris

Please forgive my ignorance. :) I'm new to sending MIDI

I setup the Ethernet switch and have connected a G5 tower and a MacBook Pro. I opened Qlab on both computers. I made sure I patched ipMIDI on both sessions. I have the computers talking to each other. On the remote computer session I put an audio cue in. On the master computer session I put an MSC cue

Output Patch: ipMIDI Port 1
Command Format: All types
Command: Go
Device: 0
Q Number: 1 (Remote session cue is also 1)
Q List:
Q Path: -

I'm not getting anything. Do I have the parameters incorrect? Not sure if I have the Device number wrong.  Help! :) Thanks Chris for your time.

Best,
Mark

You set each workspace's Device ID in the Remote Control section of Workspace Preferences. Then, when you're sending controls to that workspace, use that device ID.

When using ipMIDI, it's a good idea to have only one network connection active, so turn off Airport, and that may help. ipMIDI isn't good at prioritizing a specific network connection, so messages can get lost if you have extra ports open.

Thanks for that tip. Do I need a pro license on all computers to be able to get this to work?

Yes. But one rental license works on unlimited computers. Which is one of the many reasons why QLAB rocks.
