Hello hope for some advice

gonna invest in some equipment for at theatre tech. education in denmark.

what we need is cameras that can be used for documentation, of events , dance performances, theatre ... and also used for live projection via Qlab to mapped surfaces via Qlab3  with very low picture latency/lag

we are looking at this setup. but other suggestions are welcome, just not more expensive..solutions

Cameras 2 x Canan XF105 with sdi outputs  ( i think sdi is mush more secure solution than hdmi the plug af pro and wont break easily+ time code and long cable runs)

The plan is to use Qlab on at Macbook pro with One Thunderbolt port.. Using a good Thunderbolt hub any advice ?

then using 2 x Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder - http://www.miniconverters.com/blackmagic-design-ultrastudio-mini-recorder.html

Any advice ?

I'm also interested in using Arkaos Grandvj via syphon and Qlab for extended  video manipulation options in live situations.

Hope someone will respond soon

cheers jeppe Dk

Hello,

I don't have experience with some of the equipment, but I would like say I have never seen a Thunderbolt hub of that sort.  There are many docks, but those only include one thunderbolt port plus one for daisy-chaining to the next device.  Won't get you any extra ports.

The BMD Mini Recorders are great products, but only have one thunderbolt port, so can't be daisy-chained.  I think you would need to go up to their Ultrastudio 4k or 4k extreme to get daisy-chaining ability, and those include two SDI outs as well.  Those are $1k and $2k respectively, though.

You may be better off getting a newer Mac that has 2 Thunderbolt ports built in already...

Hello Jeppe,

We worked with 3x BMD PCI SDI cards inputs on a Mac pro 5.1 (2010)
and 2 outputs converted to SDI
Worked perfect with Q-lab only 3 frames latency.

Only one Thunderbolt is certainly a challenge, does your mac book pro gat a HDMI port?

you can convert hdmi to SDI

Best Erik

I have not bought the macbook yet..  I don't know if mac have hdmi inputs.. for sure they have hdmi output..

if i need to connect 2 external projectors, using DualHead2Go or similar solution..  its also uses the thunderbolt port... seems like my wash will cost ...

hope to find a solution.. and maybe i have to scale my expetations Down :-(

thanks for the reply so fare.. hope for even more advice :-)

I'm confused, you talk about having multiple inputs, and now multiple outputs.  Can you clarify what you'd like for inputs and outputs?  Maybe a list of each?

Thanks,
Alexander

Hello Jeppe,

Buy the MBP with 2 thunderbolts + 2 BMD mini recorder for your inputs
Output with Dual head wil work for sure, but not if you also want to attach BMD-SDI converters, dual/triple head and black magic didn't work for us.

Best
Erik

Hi,

We use Macbook pros with blackmagic ultrastudio 4k's.  It is important to keep count of the inputs and outputs ;)

There are 2 @ thunderbolt ports and 1 @ HDMI output port.

We often use one thunderbolt for input and the other with a matrox triplehead2go to get 3 outputs and then a 4th output with the HDMI port.

I don't know of any blackmagic thunderbolt devices that allow more than one input.  If you know of one or another product that does with similar latency then please let me know.

With Macbook pros, if you want 2 inputs, you can only get 1 output.

With MacPros you can get lots of outputs and inputs. I haven't experimented with the limitations, yet but theoretically you have 6 thunderbolts and 1 HDMI so that's alot.

Cheers,

Carey

Thanks for all replyes :-)

Just to be more clear.. I wish to get.

2x Sdi video inputs for connecting canon xf105
Connect to projectors using DualHead2Go.

Can ultra studio 4k for thunderbolt handles 2 sdi inputs. To a single thunderbolt port?

Not bought yet.. But the plan is to get MacBook pro with 2 thunderbolt 1 x hdmi out.

Maybe Carey already answered that question...

Sorry for all my questions..

Hi Erik

If you are using the 2 thunderbolt ports for connecting 2 BMD mini recorder for your inputs

Are you then using the Hdmi output to run 1 single Projector?

If I use Maxtor dual head to go .. that will use one of the thunderbolt ports Right ?

cheers jeppe
