Hi al,

I'm quite new to QLAB so excuse my ignorance here. We are producing a complicated multimedia show show and need to route multiple (as in four) stereo tracks to different stereo outputs (so 1-2,3-4, 5-6 or something like that).

How does one do that in QLAB? I can't seem to work it out!!

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

There are a few places to route audio in QLab, but the one you’ll use for this is the “Device & Levels” tab of the audio cue inspector.

You’d take the input channels (the channels of your file) and route them in the matrix to the output channels (which you can think of for present purposes as the outputs on your device, although they actually go through one more matrix of routing before they get to the device).

This video might help clarify a bit:

If you have four stereo tracks, you can route them using the crosspoints to 1-2, or 3-4, etc.

Please let me know if it remains unclear.

Best,
Chris

Thanks Chris!! That is super useful.

Hi Jim,

You’ll need to do the routing on the cues, rather than in the workspace settings. You’re looking for the “Device & Levels” tab on the audio cue inspector at the bottom of the workspace.

Best,
Chris

Hi again Chris.

Not having a terrible amount of luck with this I'm afraid. Here's exactly what I'm trying to do:

Our show has three stereo backing tracks. I need to rout them to three different stereo outputs through my audio interface (an mbox pro). The show has two halves os I've created two different groups with three tracks in each and selected 'start all children simultaneously' so that they play at the same time.

If I click on 'workspace settings' and then 'audio' I can see the matrix mixer. What I can't see are settings for the individual tracks (three in reach) within each group. This is what I need to send out of different stereo outputs of my mbox pro (so 1-2,3-4, 5-6 etc..) I can't seem to understand the way the information here correspondsto the individual tracks.

Cheers!

Jim

Assuming you are not trying to do this in the free version of QLab….

Here are the screenshots of the 4 routings you want. Obviously you will select your MBox Pro where my screen shots show an Octa Capture.

And just for completeness

All audio paths in QLab mixers and matrixes  are single channel. There are no stereo channels, although you can assign gangs to make faders move as pairs.

In the Device and Levels tab your stereo (2 ch) audio comes in on the left hand side into inputs 1+2 (A 4 ch file would use inputs 1-4, A 5.1 file inputs 1-6 and a mono role input 1.)
The sliders are the level controls to send the inputs to each of the cue outputs
You must have a level set in the crosspoint on the matrix between an input and an output.

If you are only using stereo files then it is probably better to  set up your default audio levels to matrix input 1 to all  odd numbered cue outputs and input 2 to all even numbered groups before you add any audio to the workspace. (screenshot attached)  That way you only need to raise the sliders for the output groups you want to use and can forget the matrix cross points all together .

You would probably want to set gangs for each pair of sliders as well (screenshot attached).

There is more on this in the QLab Cook Book;
