hey all,
this sounds like a noob question but cannot find anything on the forum.
What is the more elegant way to play the next cue and stop the previous one? At the moment I have:

Q1: play video x
Q2: stop video x, play video Y
Q3: play video Y
etc etc. (see screenshot atchd)

the problem tho is that when I fire each clip there's a always a little delay -even if I pre-load the clip. My clips are 1920x1080p, I'm using a new MacBookPro retina 2.3 ghz, 16RAM, NVIDIA geforce GT 750M 2048 MB, SSD.

It looks like your logic is basically sound.  Not sure why you’re seeing a delay but I tend to run 1024x768 mostly.  You might try putting a small Post Wait on the Autocontinues to let the new video get going before you stop the old one.

Try bringing in all video on the bottom layer

Then instead of using a stop use a 0.2 s fade on the previous clip and 'stop target when done'

This will give you really silky quick transitions.

If you are still getting a visible delay then you may have some other problem

And Cut  and paste is your friend here. You can cut and paste the fade cue and just drag the outgoing cue on to it each time you paste it.

I've been using Qlab for some time, but my cue lists are always relatively simple so please forgive this naive question:

What does "Try bringing in all video on the bottom layer" mean?

Video clips can play in layers with the higher layer being ‘above’ or visible over a lower layer.  By default, clips play on the top layer and a new clip will be played over the previous one.  If you set the layer of a video cue below the currently playing layer, then it will start ‘under’ the current clip and you won’t see it unless you stop the clip above it.  You can change the layer in the Display & Geometry tab of your Video cue tab in QLab 3 (Settings tab in V2).

What Mic is suggesting is to start playing your new clip on a layer below the current one and then fading out the current clip instead of stopping it.  It takes a little thought to manage your layers, but it is an approach.  You have 1000 layers to play with so chances are you won’t run out as you work your way down.

One more note: it’s _very_ important to set the fade to ‘Stop target when done’ especially in V2.  Running video with 0 opacity causes bad things to happen.  I suspect this was fixed in V3, but it’s always best to keep things tidy :-)

In v3 very little layer management is necessary. If you hit the up arrow where the layer says top in the display and geometry tab it will then say bottom.
