Hi Folks,
Does Qlab support using Alpha Channels for transparent backgrounds in
video? I realize it does for still PNGs, but I have not gotten movie
images to layer.

I am projection designer for a show in tech and am not able play
videos exported from Final Cut Express with transparent alpha
backgrounds to properly layer in Qlab. The video moment is falling
snowflakes (white figures with transparent black background), and I've
used luminance keying to combine multiple falling flakes in my FCE
project. My goal is to loop my falling flakes clip in Qlab playback so
that I can end the video moment on a particular loop of the video,
making it look like all the flakes fall to the bottom, rather than
just use a long video clip and using an opacity animation to fade out
the flakes mid-air.

Any thoughts or suggestion? Do I have to enable alpha channels somehow
in Qlab, or adjust the 'layers' settings in a certain way. I realize
this is also a FCE related question, but snooped around FCE forums and
have read that Animation codecs should export Alpha channels, and I've
tried exporting using a variety alpha settings in my 1280x720 QT vid.

A speedy response would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

Hi Davey.

You should be able to use a QuickTime movie, with the Animation codec, to generate a movie file with an alpha channel. Don't forget to turn on RGB+ or Millions of Colors+ or RGBA (I don't have FCE, so I can't speak to how it tells you there's an alpha channel being rendered) when you export. QLab will honor any alpha channel in a video cue, so the issue is outside of QLab, and in your export.

Thanks,

hey i got the background to export transparent in FCE and properly
layer in Qlab! thanks for helping in my troubleshooting!

for future reference if anyone inquires with the same difficulties: in
my FCE timeline, i had to remove my clip, then replace it into the
timeline so that it is UNRENDERED. then i exported as noted (QT movie,
animation codec, millions of collors+). the export took a bit longer
than usual probably because it was working with an unrendered clip,
but it was the only thing that has made it work. not sure why this
works, but i read the suggestion here, http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1004500

thanks again,
