Hello,
I am a newbie to to QIIME  and I have recently installed QIIME 1.9.1 using the recommended base install via Virtualbox on my linux ubuntu 14.04 OS. THe virtual machine runs fine, however when I try to install guest additions i am asked to provide a password. I have used the suggested "qiime" password, but it doesn't work. Is there any other password necessary for installing guest additions?

Thank you,

Daniel

Daniel, if you search for "virtualbox guest" in this forum, do any of the previous discussions help?

Do you need to use the password for your user on the host computer?

I found nothing looking through the forms. I am currently not using a host computer, but will be in the future.

  • When running the guest additions installation, authentication is needed to run '/bin/sh' as a super user

The password is 'qiime' without quotes.

Sometimes in linux, when you type in a password, you won't see any letters or stars (*) appearing. This is OK! Even if you don't see letters as you type, your password is still being entered. (Linux does this so that someone over your sholder will not know how long your password is.)

Let me know if that helps!

Hey Colin,

I actually tried that before and it still didint work. Sometimes when i leave my computer on and it goes to sleep, the Virtual MAchine requires a password to login and using qiime doesn't work for that either.

I was considering installing natively. But im having a hard time with that as well, but this is what i get: when i time print_qiime_config.py -t:

aniel@daniel-HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC:~/Desktop$ print_qiime_config.py -t
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/local/bin/print_qiime_config.py", line 57, in <module>

That' is so strange... Could the password have ben changed somehow?

If you are using the VM and was working well for you up until now, a good option may be downloading another copy of the VM and starting fresh. This new copy will have qiime configured, a default password of 'qiime,' and should allow you to continue analysis.
