Hi,

I consistently get a network timed out message and no connection, of course, from the PuTTY terminal while trying to connect to qiime AWS instances.  Putty documentation says that the problem is between my Windows machine(s) and the server (US East Virginia N).  I have a high speed internet connection.  Is there a fix?  Thanks. Darwin

Hi Darwin,

In general these timeouts are due to inactivity in the terminal and
caused by your internet provider, your ssh client or both, so my
suggestion is to either talk to your internet provider or change your
ssh client. Anyway, here you can find a list of ssh clients
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_SSH_clients

Something else that might be useful is to use screen, this will allow
you to recover your session (and running jobs) if your connection gets
terminated, a tutorial can be found in here:
http://www.rackaid.com/resources/linux-screen-tutorial-and-how-to/

Cheers

Antonio,
Thank you for you help. The timeout problem was due to me not setting SSH properly in the firewall. I'm sorry that I couldn't find the goof quicker. Now I'm stalled on the next step. The terminal opens with:
Using username: ec2-user
Then a "PuTTY Fatal Error" message that reads "Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: public key)."
An earlier attempt resulted in a "Server refused our key" message. Obviously, my efforts to strictly follow the guides for getting the keypair protocol to work has failed and I'm out of ideas.
Thanks. Darwin

The bottom half of the System Log for my latest fatal error attempt follows:

Hi Darwin,

Sorry for the slow reply. Have you figured out the issue? Have you
tried following these instructions
http://ged.msu.edu/angus/tutorials-2011/logging-into-ec2-windows.html
?

Cheers
