So, I've been using Qiime v 1.6.0 (through virtual machine) and suddenly today it won't power on. I get the following errors:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine QIIME1_6.
The virtual machine 'QIIME1_6' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1

and

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully.

I don't know what the kernel driver is, but I'm unaware of having made any changes to qiime between when it was working yesterday and when it wasn't today. Any suggestions??

Hi,

Have you upgraded your Virtual Box software? I've seen this error in the newest version of Virtual Box, and downgrading it will make your VB to work.

Let me know if it works!

I have not to my knowledge, and am getting notifications that I should upgrade VB now. I'll try upgrading then downgrading. What version do you suggest?

I've tested versions 4.2.4 and 4.2.0. I don't know about other versions.

I've got VirtualBox 4.2.6 and it seems to also work. Can you post the version of VirtualBox you are using?

Hi,

can you try to download the QIIME-VB image again and test if this works? This way we can know if there is a problem with your VirtualBox installation or with the image you were using.

I've downloaded it. When I double-click it in downloads I'm told I don't have the necessary application to open it...

Sorry, yes, that does work. Is there any way to update files I was working on in my previous installation, or do I just need to move them by hand?

I think the easiest way is moving them by hand.

ok. and finally, I guess not all my updates are possible to download.
I'm getting directed to this error page when I try to upload suggested updates:

what should I do?

Are you trying to update you ubuntu in the VB? If so, this is not needed for running QIIME. You can run QIIME without updating it.

And when I try to install guest additions I get the following message:

Unable to mount the CD/DVD image /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso on the machine QIIME1_6. Would you like to force mounting of this medium?

Could not mount the media/drive
'/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA-LOCKED).

This is strange, i feel i was able to upload guest additions the first time around

I was trying to update ubuntu in the VM, so I won't if that's not necessary.

I tried to follow those instructions but the GUI is not set up so that the instructions made sense. Attaching a snapshot of how mine looks (there was no guest addition option in the dropdown menu, so I clicked on the cd titled "guest additions" but not sure what the setting should be...)

I'm not sure how I should know if it worked. If I open the qiime VM again and try to download guest additions it still gives me the same error...

Hi,

Not sure what's happening. Can you select the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (as you have done in the screenshot you sent) an then click on the red minus sign located at the end of the list? It will remove this image from the list and I think it will allow you to follow the steps listed in the 'Before you start...' folder in the VM Desktop.

Let me know if it works!!

In this case the error is
"Could not insert the VirtualBox Guest Additions installer CD image into the virtual machine WIIME1_6, as the machine has no CD/DVD-ROM drives. Please add a drive using the storage page of the virutal machine settings dialog."

So what settings are appropriate?

Uhm...

In the Storage configuration page, where it says 'Controller: IDE Controller', next to it should appear a buttton which says "Add CD/DVD device". Try adding it and check if it works.

Sorry if this is taking too long...

well... now the weirdest thing is happening... It seemed like the guest additions were installed following step 2 of instructions on the VM desktop. But then I tried to enter the sudo code from step 3 in the terminal window and was told command could not be found. I shut down the VM and reopened, and now every time I open it, 17 open simultaneously. and if I close one of the 17 VM windows, all 17 of them close... What's happening??

Yup, this is very weird... We're working on it.

One think that you can do right now is start with a clean QIIME image again and do not install the VBoxGuestAdditions. They make the interaction with the VM easier, but they are not needed to run QIIME.

I'll come back to you when I found a solution.

ok, thanks. So I figured out the display issue. For some reason display settings changed itself to 17 monitors, so easy fix. I think I had not done step 2 properly, because there was no places tab to complete the second part of step 2. After going back I THINK everything looks normal now...

Thanks,
Sarah
