Hi there,

I'm a complete newcomer to VirtualBox and QIIME so please excuse my lack of know-how. Frustratingly I've run into problems before I've even been able to open QIIME.

I am running windows 8 as my host OS and I had trouble downloading VirtualBox 4.3.12 on it so I downloaded a previous version instead (4.3.6) then just upgraded it to 4.3.12 once it was installed. I then downloaded the QIIME VirtualBox VDI file and unzipped it using 7-zip (no issue there that I know of). My problem came when I tried to create a new machine as per the instructions on: http://qiime.org/install/virtual_box.html
When I follow the prompts to select an existing hard drive and I select the QIIME VDI file, it registers as inaccessible and comes up with the error below:

Failed to open the hard disk file C:\Users\andrea\VirtualBox VMs\QIIME\QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi.

Cannot register the hard disk 'C:\Users\andrea\VirtualBox VMs\QIIME\QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi' {9ef44425-c104-4607-9de3-6b27665999b9} because a hard disk 'C:\Users\andrea\Downloads\QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi\QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi' with UUID {9ef44425-c104-4607-9de3-6b27665999b9} already exists.

Result Code: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBox
Interface: IVirtualBox {fafa4e17-1ee2-4905-a10e-fe7c18bf5554}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)

Everything prior to this was as normal, ie my computer is 64 bit so I had no issue launching Linux Ubuntu (64bit) for the VM. If I then create the VM regardless and try to run it, this error message comes up:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine QIIME2.

No error info.

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ProgressProxy
Interface: IProgress {c20238e4-3221-4d3f-8891-81ce92d9f913}

I have tried Googling both errors but I haven't been able to find anything that helps.
Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated.
Thanks!

Can you please clarify this? Are you indicating that you were able to open a Linux Ubuntu VM and have it boot?

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply!
Sorry for the confusion, I simply meant that when I was creating a new machine I was able to select the Ubuntu (64bit) option. I saw this was a problem for some people so I thought I'd mention it.
When I disregard the instruction on the QIIME website and create a new hard drive instead to selecting a current hard drive (ie the QIIME VDI file) and try to run it, I get the error attached. Not sure if this helps.
Cheers,

Andrea

Okay, thanks.

Can you try opening My Computer, navigating to "C:\Users\andrea\VirtualBox VMs\QIIME\" and double-clicking on the QIIME .vdi file and see what happens please?

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Tried that avenue already, it opens VirtualBox with the message seen in the attached doc.

Thanks

Okay, thanks.

Can you open a command prompt please (windowskey + r, and run 'cmd'). Once you're in the prompt, can you execute the following and send the output?

cd \Users\andrea\Downloads\
dir *.vdi

I've never seen this issue before, but what I suspect is that either the .vdi is corrupt or it isn't actually extracted as windows lets you "open" compressed files as though they are folders. Since you're in Australia, I'm assuming that redownloading the image isn't exactly an exciting prospect, so let me ask around internally about this and get back to you.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Here is the output:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\andrea\Downloads>cd \Users\andrea\Downloads\

C:\Users\andrea\Downloads>dir *.vdi
Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is A6EE-8BFF

 Directory of C:\Users\andrea\Downloads

19/12/2013  09:50 PM    11,137,748,992 QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi

               0 Dir(s)  13,047,607,296 bytes free

C:\Users\andrea\Downloads>

I can try re-downloading QIIME, it took about 40 minutes last time. Can I download it on top of the existing files or do I need to fully delete the corrupted ones first?
Thank you very much for your help, It's much appreciated!

Andrea

Okay, thanks. Before you retry downloading, can you open My Computer and navigate to c:\Users\andrea\Downloads and double click on QIIME-1.8.0-amd64.vdi? (last time we did this was in a different folder). If that doesn't work, I recommend deleting the .vdi file, and the references that you can find within VirtualBox and then redownload.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Unfortunately that didn't work either - it produces the same result as when I double clicked it from the VirtualBox VMs folder.
HOWEVER I just deleted the files and re-downloaded QIIME and now it's up and running... finally!! It must have just been corrupt as you said because now it is working just as it should.

Thanks so much for your help!

Cheers,

Andrea
