How is the initial seedings (pairing of players) for the Final
Tournament determined?

Is it random?

Or do the results of the practice matches factor into the seeding?

I've been curious about this as well, but I suppose we'll find out
soon enough,

Any idea when we can see results? Is there another place to look for
the results?

They updated the home page with a message that says, "The first
preliminary results will be posted Wednesday, February 15th." I guess
we just have to be patient.

i wonder why it takes so long?

there are 56 contestants. which means 111 rounds in a double-
elimination tournament.

My 3-year old machine can run 111 matches in about 3 minutes. but even
at single-threaded real-time (111 matches * 900 turns * .1 seconds * 2
players) it would take less than 6 hours.

I don't know for sure. But I'm assuming they are taking some
additional time to views of the matches that are more suitable for
general consumption that the trace file. IIRC, they created .avi
video files of the collegiate matches and a representation of the
brackets. I'm hoping they are doing the same thing for our contest.

Anyway, I could use the time to get back to learning app development
on the Droid platform. :-)

Sounds like they are going to post all the results at once.

Would be more fun if they posted round by round IMHO.

masato12610, thanks. I was doing back and my view of the page must
have been cached. I never saw the update.

In prior tournaments, they released the results a round at a time.
While it strains one's patience, revealing results this way builds
dramatic tension. After working on the programs for a month or so, I
would venture to guess that having to wait a couple days for the
results won't do any serious harm. ;-)

i was assuming there would be an applet that just plays back the trace
file.

spongman, as to the time it takes, I assume the actual tournament will
require sufficient isolation of the players using VMs as they
described. That may mean copying the VM image back after each round is
played. Otherwise, your player may be hosed by the machinations of a
less scrupulous player. I can easily see this taking a little bit of
time.
