Dear Artist Friends,

The Wayne Plein Air Festival has wrapped up, and I’m back in Austin, feeling good about what I did. I can see that I’m still growing and learning new tricks. Since last October, I’ve been using saturated red for my underpainting, and I love the results. The interaction between the underpainting and the foreground colors creates a kind of vibration—almost like a visual equivalent of a musical effect. The underpainting feels like the left-hand chords on a piano, while the foreground colors act as the right-hand melody, playing together in sync. Many artists have used this approach, and I only wish I had started doing it long ago.

Best regards,

Qiang
