Hi,

So Meetup is raising its prices. I asked the PSF Meetup group organizer what it would mean to join their network.
Today I received this message.

As my next payment is on November 26, and I don't have time to move my other two groups off Meetup before the new payment. I will have to extend my Meetup subscription for 6 months.
That means it will still cover the fee for PyWeb-IL as well.

So we can move PyWeb-IL over to the PSF Meetup Pro network now, or we can postpone the decision by up to 6 months.

Please read their conditions, including the Code of Conduct.

What do you think?

Gabor
ps. If you would like to make a monetary contribution to me, you can still do it, regardless of the Meetup status :-) The best might be via GitHub Sponsors https://github.com/sponsors/szabgab/

Subject: Invitation to join Python Software Foundation's Meetup Pro network

This message is being sent from Meetup on behalf of the Python Software Foundation Meetup Pro networkPlease do not respond to this email and instead reach out to accou...@python.org with any questions.

Hello,

We think your Meetup group, PyWeb-IL, would be a great fit for joining the PSF’s Meetup Pro network.

Below is some information about the Sponsorship Model of Meetup Pro along with a few links for you to review.

The PSF initiated a Python Software Foundation Meetups Pro network and chose the Sponsorship model instead of the Ownership model. The Sponsorship model allows the PSF to invite existing groups to the Meetup Pro network. The organizers no longer pay for the meetup subscription once they become part of the PSF network.

The PSF can run reports on meetup activity, such as number of interested attendees and number of events. However, management of membership and events is left to the group's organizers. Any deposits for RSVPing to an event or paying for an event is managed by the organizer, not the PSF.

Once an organizer has accepted the invite, there will be a notation under the group name: “Part of Python Software Foundation network.” In the future, the PSF can set up event templates that organizers may choose to use or set up a Slack channel for all PSF organizers to share best practices. See this article for more information.

Event Frequency

Meetup groups in Python Software Foundation’s Meetup Pro network must hold at least 2 events per calendar year to stay in the network. Events may be online or in-person.

Code of Conduct

The PSF requires that you either post a link (you can use the PSF’s CoC) or full text of your code of conduct in the About section of your Meetup page to become eligible and remain in the PSF Meetup network.

Invoicing

The PSF will pay for your Meetup fees directly; local organizers will no longer have to pay for an individual organizer subscription.

If you are interested in adding your group to the PSF’s Meetup network, you can apply for a PSF Meetup grant on our website. Please include basic information about your group, as well as the % of meetups dedicated to Python.

If you have any questions or need to get in touch, please email accou...@python.org.

Thank you!
Python Software Foundation

I'm -0.5 on joining. My first instinct is squarely against such closed
platforms, especially the second after they demonstrate how they can
abuse their power. It is mitigated by the fact that we're joining the
PSF network.

agreed, not only because they cover the expenses and conditions are reasonable, but because being part of the PSF is a good signal to newcomers who don't know if this is serious

+1 on joining. Definitely agree with alonn, it gives us free PR. We should note clearly though that talks are in Hebrew (we had some attendees in the past that were not aware of that).

Thanks for all the responses.

I have submitted the application to get a grant for our Meetup group.

Among other things they asked for a link to our Code of Conduct so I created one https://python.org.il/en/pyweb-code-of-conduct based on https://pycon.org.il/2024/pages/code-of-conduct.html
I also had to provide our Health and Safety policy. I created a page for that as well: https://python.org.il/en/pyweb-health

If you think either of those need improvements, please let me know / send a PR.

The automated response told me it can take up to 6 weeks for PSF to make a decision.

In principle, I agree with Shai but I'm +1 for joining.

I'm also +1 for starting an open source project to replace the evil meetup. It's been a thorn in my side for over a decade and  it's time pyweb-il has itself a project. If we get it right, the PSF will adopt it, providing us with a great base for ridding the world of the meetup beast.

שבוע טוב ובשורות טובות,

Benny

Discourse (the system used for forums by the PSF and Django, among
others, although it is built in Rails) seems to be able to handle the
technical requirements. We just adapted Hamakor's instance for this,
see https://forum.hamakor.org.il

Have fun,
Shai.

Replacing Meetup.com with an open-source solution is PyWeb-IL's Israeli-Palestine conflict. I remember people from both sides got so angry at each other last time this was seriously discussed, which was around a decade ago. Even if we had a Meetup.com alternative that's just as functional, the fact that there's a mass of normies who are used to Meetup.com is, in my opinion, more relevant than any other consideration.

I think that open-source people have a certain blindness that makes them think that some things are normal when they're really not. Every time I have to subscribe to a GNU Mailman-managed mailing list so I could ask a question about an open-source project, which has been increasingly rare in the last 5 years, I'm reminded of how big the gap in UI expectation is between open-source people and normal people.

Alas, Meetup is not a piece of software. It is a... ugh... social network... that enjoys a "network effect"...

You didn't replace it until your solution becomes the first thing people google when they want to find a meeting. I'm very much not sure PSF adoption will get us there. We'll probably need tens of millions of dollars in marketing.

Unless we find a very good go-to-market strategy.

Uh, allow anyone on the internet to build a mirror page for any meetup and let the meetup runners take control of it later, so a small team of volunteers can get all the content in the open source/development field to be mirrored in our site? Probably need to send people to register at the source until the organizers take over.

Somehow start from conferences and slowly trickle towards meetups? The conferences space sounds a lot less occupied.

Hi,

If you visit https://www.meetup.com/pyweb-il/ you can see that we are now part of the  Python Software Foundation Meetup Pro Network.

Their requirement is
1. We keep a link to our Code of Conduct in the About of the group.
2. Have at least 2 meetings (online or in person) per year.
3. Majority of the content is about Python.

regards
    Gabor
