Dear all,
We are happy to announce the next Pytroll Contributor Week (PCW), which will take place from Monday 18 May to Friday 22
May 2026. The meeting will be in person, and will be hosted by National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)
in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Participation is free of charge.
The PCW for those who want, will continue with an optional excursion to the Aeolian islands of Lipari and Stromboli on
May 22-24 (more details below).
The PCW is for everyone who wants to learn and/or work with Pytroll modules. The event is tailored for people who are
already familiar with Pytroll modules and want to learn more or contribute code or documentation. The interaction with
the core developers makes it quicker to form a plan on how to solve an issue or add a new feature.
Over the years many users participated to learn about Pytroll, through installing modules from scratch and running
through tutorials (for
example, [
https://github.com/pytroll/tutorial-satpy-half-day](https://github.com/pytroll/tutorial-satpy-half-day)).
The in-person interaction with the core developers in the past made it easy to ask quick questions to clarify some
points that may not be obvious when running the tutorial. For planning purposes, and in order to give every participant
the right permissions for the different tools we will be using and receive information about the venue, please register
your attendance by May 1st by entering your details, no later than March 1st, into
[this spreadsheet](
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qp4qNL56XuxC4rziDpO195rZKe1COsBkH0BDEGs-VMg/edit?usp=sharing)
If you intend to work with improving Pytroll modules, please register issues, pull requests or notes on the issue board
set up for the event at [
https://github.com/orgs/pytroll/projects/25](https://github.com/orgs/pytroll/projects/25)
This way we can follow the progress of everyone and form teams of related interests.
Please tell us if you can't access the board so that we can fix the permissions for you.The agenda will be quite simple
and involve hands-on work during the day and a round-table status meeting before we end the days. Presentations by
participants are always welcome, so don't hesitate to prepare a few slides if you think you have something interesting
to show.
For those who cannot be there in person, we will of course be online during the week and be able to chat on slack from
time to time. This will however not be organised as a hybrid meeting, so we cannot guarantee a video stream of the
status meetings for example
Note that the Autumn PCW is planned however to be fully remote.
We are excited to meet many of you in Reggio between 18 May and 22 May. Please do not hesitate to share this
announcement with anyone who you think might be interested.
Dario and Martin
## Venue and logistics
For the first time it will not be held inside the research institute but in the premises of the National Archaeological
Museum of Reggio Calabria.
The Museum is known for hosting the Riace Bronzes, we couldn't have that room , but we will work in the one on the top
floor with the Strait of Messina and the Etna volcano as the skyline.
Given the special nature of the event and to provide the best logistical planning (especially for the excursion to the
Aeolian Islands), please register as soon as possible and no later than March 1st by entering your details into
[this spreadsheet](
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qp4qNL56XuxC4rziDpO195rZKe1COsBkH0BDEGs-VMg/edit?usp=sharing)
Keep in mind that the Aeolian Islands are very small, very touristy, with few connections and a limited number of
hotels/bed and breakfasts.
Lunch: Monday-Thursday offered by INGV
Social Dinner:
It’s planned on Thursday evening in a restaurant in Reggio. We will leave from the museum at 16, we will take the train to Scilla town, a very fast visit to the village and we will take the train to Reggio at 19.30 -20 . Then 1.5 km walk to the restaurant.
** Please tell us if you are vegan or if you suffer from food allergies or intolerances **

## Optional excursion to the Aeolian Islands
We will leave the Museum at 12.30 on Friday and take the hydrofoil to Lipari island at 1.20 pm.
We will spend the Friday evening and night in Lipari to, the next morning, take the hydrofoil to Stromboli.
Once our luggage has been stored in the hotel, we will have the morning to visit the village and maybe take a dip in the sea. In the afternoon accompanied by a volcanological guide we will climb the slopes of the volcano. Saturday dinner in the village, night in the hotel.
Sunday morning breakfast with brioche and granita, free time until the hydrofoil to Milazzo in the afternoon.
After a few hours at the station there will be a night train to Rome.
Keep in mind: We plan to contact the hotels to determine their availability and possibly secure a discount for members of the Pytroll group but the responsibility for booking both overnight stays and means of transport (hydrofoil and train) lies with the individual participant.
Reaching the Aeolian Islands is subject to weather conditions. May is not yet a summer month, and marine conditions are possible that risk canceling or delaying the hike.
If unfortunately it happens we will try to reschedule the excursion either to Etna volcano or to another interesting place on land.
Hotel in Stromboli (the same of our mission in field campaign) for saturday night:

50€ night breakfast included . The reservation must be made with cc to "Dario Stelitano" <
