imread.imsave - saving metadata in tiff file

I am successfully using imread.imsave to save 16bit tiff files from a Python script used to process images from archived monochrome negatives 'scanned' with a digital camera, but, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to save EXIF metadata with the file. I'm not a trained programmer, and am relatively inexperienced with Python, so I'm probably missing the obvious.

If someone could post a code fragment showing how to structure the metadata, and how to save it with the image data, I would be most grateful.
