Wheat spikelet recognition.

Hello,

I have to analyse wheat image growth with this objectives: 

1. segment wheat spikelet regions then
2. count the number of grains on each spikelet in the region.

I thought it could be implemented by using python vision. In addition, I am new learner for python and image processing.

Any suggestions? what the steps that i should follow. and Any links to related works?
