Hi All,

Was talking to Mick today and he suggested that we should get cracking on the poster and biz card design. So, since I have a little time on my hands, I've dummied up a few biz card designs and a poster.

Mick suggested a web2.0 bubble thingy for the companies. Can people think of more companies? I found these via the following sites:
* http://www.python.org/psf/members/
* http://wiki.python.org/moin/OrganizationsUsingPython
* http://www.python.org/about/success/

Let's get a discussion going. Found a printing place by DIT (Loganprint n copy Ltd), and the price seems very reasonable, 250 biz cards for EUR135 and individual A3 poster for EUR 13.50 (190 highgloss).

Cheers,

/// Vicky

I have a comment about fonts. "Python" is in its original sans-serif
font, "Ireland" is in a little similar, but serif font. How about
trying having "Ireland" in the same font as "Python"? Or the opposite
direction, if you decide to use two different fonts in the logo, how
about a completely different font? Let's say, as different as this
one: http://www.skylineonline.com/promo/Magic%20of%20Ireland%20-%20Logo.jpg

Cheers,
Maciej

Mick was about to buy that font that Python used. That's the the logo we use on our Python Ireland tshirts. BTW, we got lots of nice comments from the PyConUK guys about our tees. ;)

Sure, keep the ideas coming! And if anyone has some funny line to put on the poster, post it here as well.

Vicky,

Don't know what xkcd would say, but the first frame from this cartoon would make a great poster:

That comic, like every comic in XKCD, is under creative commons. As a non-commercial entiry (which I suspect we are, unless Vicky and Mick are making a killing on T-shirt sales), we can freely use them.

Also, it would look really cool because XKCD is funny.

I agree, though it'd make sense to mail the xkcd bloke anyway, sure
he'd like to know if we use it :)

Ok, I'll do that. And we make a loss with the tees anyway, but it's worth it to get peeps to wear 'em though.

The images and funny lines are for the posters, and if there is room, biz cards as well (if you want).

I like 82, that said it is an in joke that needs explaining,

perhaps a poster with a print out of

>>> import this
The Zen of Python, by Tim Peters

Beautiful is better than ugly.
Explicit is better than implicit.
Simple is better than complex.
Complex is better than complicated.
Flat is better than nested.
Sparse is better than dense.
Readability counts.
Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules.
Although practicality beats purity.
Errors should never pass silently.
Unless explicitly silenced.
In the face of ambiguity, refuse the temptation to guess.
There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.
Although that way may not be obvious at first unless you're Dutch.
Now is better than never.
Although never is often better than *right* now.
If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea.
If the implementation is easy to explain, it may be a good idea.
Namespaces are one honking great idea -- let's do more of those!

Oh, one that's less wordy as an example. :)

If xkcd guy gets back to me and we can use his image, I have one dummied up already, just need to wait for his ok before sending to list.

By the way, I'm going to set a deadline for early next week for all to decide on the design, as it will be my first week back in college, and I may get too busy to get this done. So I want to do this while I still have some free time.

* Which biz card design (if any) do you prefer? Any other ideas?
* Poster, how many do we print? We can choose at least 2 or 3 designs. These will be A3 posters. We can print out A4 versions ourselves on glossy paper for handouts.

Cheers,

Tell Randall Munroe that in excahnge for the use of his image, we will buy him a few pints at the next Python Ireland meeting he attends. That sounds like a fair exchange (and we might get to meet the guy from XKCD too!).

I like all of the posters so far, and the 3rd business card is my
favorite (the one with both urls and the small logo in the top left).

I had another go at the tagcloud idea, see what you think

http://blog.odonnell.nu/banner.png

count me in for any costs for printing when we get it done.

Thanks, Sean. I would also like to point out that Mick mentioned The Zen of Python to mepretty early on, but for some reason, I couldn't put 1 and 1 together and then you sent the full thing. Heehee. You and Mick thought of the tag clud thing as well, great minds think alike and all that, I suppose.. ;)

I'll do up a poster with the tag cloud as well.

How many A3 posters will we do, 4 or 5?  All different designs?

I've enquired about the pricing of A4 flyers as well this morning. Hopefully by mid-week, I will have the order in. So keep the ideas and comments rolling in!

Cheers,

Hi Vicky.

Try Larabiefonts.com (I think) you can download the stuff for free.

Also, when you have a logo, can you send it on so we can use it in the IWTC brochure / signage etc – an electronic copy would suffice now for the IWTC website.

Also, if any one wishes to promote the Python / IWTC relationship, heres a badge for their blogs / website / social space etc.

Right-click and save or paste the following code into your site or social space
<a href="http://IWTC.firstport.ie"><img alt="Supporting the Irish Technology Community" src="http://IWTC.firstport.ie/badges/IWTC_community_support_badge.gif" title="Supporting the Irish Technology Community" /></a>

Best

Barry
