Hi all,

Since we're not meeting monthly, would any of you be interested in a coding sprint?  The Montreal Python group has them and they seem to be a lot of fun.

I'm thinking of a Saturday where we start some time after breakfast and go until dinner.

The Python Software Foundation will contribute up to $350 for any Python coding sprint, so we could even pay for a space and buy some pizza/refreshments.

What would we sprint on?  Some ideas:
- Python itself (I'm a core committer)
- Django?
- Something completely for fun?
- Suggestions?

I've also tossed around the idea of inviting the Rubyists in Calgary to do a joint sprint...

At any rate, I'm relying on feedback to know if there is any interest :)

Cheers!

Jerry

I actually been helping a tinny bit with the PyPy project. But any python related project is good for me!

This Cowboy Code (me), agrees. I think a sprint would be a lot of fun.

Sounds interesting. I suspect I'd be in over my head, but it sounds like a good way to learn.

re: Calgary python coding sprint

This Cowboy Coder has an idea and it may have commercial value. I've cc'd CLUG because maybe there's someone out there that would like to participate, have info, or say "this has already been done" or "that's a really dumb idea" :)

If so, reply to python...@googlegroups.com.

<idea>
shell command via SMS and standard out being texted back to you
</idea>

I've worked with sending texts (SMS) *from* Linux / Python but never issuing a shell command from my phone and receiving stdout texted back.

So you'd obviously need an SMS gateway and some kind of broker mechanism with ssh keys to handle the login and then issue the command, return stdout to ???something??? that would text you back.

You'd also have to provision a DID for each server you'd like to text, etc., and how/can you prevent someone from spoofing your CID???

Like I said, maybe this has already been done or maybe it's a stupid idea. I just like the idea of SMS because any cell phone can do it.

... and you'd probably sweat bullets if you ever lost your phone :) or ever left i lying around, cuz I guess, it's would alway be "logged in"???

Ya, I have an iPhone with TouchTerm on it so I can ssh into any of my servers ... just thinking of something "lower common denominator".

I've been wanting to work more on implementing all of the ncurses functionality into Python - we should pick a date!

Wow, thanks everyone for the feedback!

Coming up with a list of things we'd need:
- A date.  End of March/early April would give us about 8 weeks to organize things and would still be before the end of the school term.
- A place.  Has power.  Nice to haves would be tables, chairs, internet, projector.  Some place that would allow us to have food would also be nice, so the library is not my first choice.
  - I've looked at Mount Royal's website, but haven't inquired about prices
  - I've looked at the U of C Student's Union, haven't phoned yet.
  - Greg mentioned the Arusha Center might be open for rentals too.  Nice central location.
- An official announcement/rsvp site.  rsvps would be nice to have to get an estimated head count.

If you have any ideas or want to help out, let me know.  The Python Software Foundation will contribute up to $300 for a sprint.  I'm hoping we could rent a space and buy pizza for lunch with that.

Hi all
I think Jerry covered most of the stuff we need to have down before sending the the sprint application to PSF.

The only detail we are missing is the goal of the sprint:
Here are the options PSF suggests(http://pythonsprints.com/cfa/)
  • Python Core work, e.g, bug triage, documentation
  • Porting libraries/applications to Python 3
  • PyPI and packaging related improvements
  • Contribution to Python VMs, e.g., PyPy, IronPython
  • Contribution to other Python projects, e.g., Django, PIL, pywin32 and so on..
Any preferences??

E.
