Hi Group,
in the past I have been asking a lot of questions regarding qt and maya stuff..With a fellow friend of mine, Rico Koschmitzky, we have been developing a region render tool, similar to the one one softimage, for Maya.
Justin and Marcus were a huge help with the Qt implementation, and I really want to thank you two :)
Right now we are confident with our progress and want to share what we have done so far with our region render tool.

check out the demo video below.

Best regards,
Arvid Schneider

Glad you figured it out, looks really cool.

I know a lot of people who would be really happy about a feature like this - folks coming from Softimage and expected this to be standard everywhere, and I think it should be as it seems like such a useful feature.

Where’s it headed - for sale, proprietary, open source?

Nice Jobs, hopefully Mental Ray or VRay support will be added !

As I understand it, its’ simply triggering a render and putting the results in a custom widget. Should work with any rendered capable of outputting images to disk.

Really awesome! Any plans to support other renderers?

Hello everybody,

thank you all for your kind words!
We will release this for free, early next year :)

We started this as spare time project to make ourselves more acquaint with Python, Qt and the Maya API and to make our day-to-day workflow easier.
It's part of our custom python package that includes more tools and functionality and because we have some more ideas we like to enhance first, there is no plan (at the moment)
to support Mental Ray or VRay.
But Marcus is nearly right with that (we are just taking a modified clone of the renderView panel and putting this in our widget), so I guess the effort wouldn't be that
high to support other renderers in the future.

cheers
Rico

That is really cool, and in the interest of seeing more development on this, I’ll just throw it out there that you could quite easily sell this as-is. That could potentially allow you to put in more development time or alternative get some other guys on it and take it to where I think it could go; to a widely used, successful product. Here’s a developer monetizing in a similar fashion to what I’m imagining for you.

A common mistake, I’ve found, is to underestimate the value in something that seems “easy” to the developer, but when taking into consideration the development environment (i.e. in production) and experience of you guys there’s plenty of incentive for others to throw their money at you. And like I said, I could point you to at least one studio right now who probably would.

Anyway, just a thought. :)
