Converting MEL to Python

Hi all,
I've been only scripting in Python for a while and I'm completely new to MEL .Currently I'm attempting to convert an Open source MEL script to Python. How can I start off with the conversion .? Will literal conversion of the MEL commands to Python do the job , keeping the logic to be the same ?

I saw a couple of codes online that do the job , but I'm not sure how accurate or compatible they would be . Is there any reliable code conversion script can you point me to.

Any leads will be very useful .
