i think the problem in accessing DB is that it's a "blocking" operation, so you should look for a solution where there an asynch one, like MongoDB, there is http://www.dunnington.net/entry/asynchronous-mongodb-in-tornado-with-asyncmongo

You could look at this which provides an async (Python 3) interface with riak. Not sure how to integrate this with Tornado though.
