Hi Group!

I have a suggestion for something a little different for this month's meetup (June 13th). How about a code dojo!

Code dojos take various forms, but having been to a London code dojo myself, I like to suggest a rather simple and very fun format. We, as a group on the night choose a simple coding task (create a noughts and crosses game for example), then split off into several teams to work for an hour on the chosen task. After the hour, each group presents what they have produced (or more likely, what they've almost produced) to the meeting as a whole. The idea is to provide a friendly, safe place to try coding in teams for fun and to learn from each others mistakes - assuming of course that we shall mostly be making mistakes :)

You don't have to be an expert to take part, you don't even have to know Python to contribute! Hopefully, there will be something for everyone.

(If you have no idea what I'm talking about, this video of a talk on how the London dojo got started gives a nice introduction)

What do you think?

Kieran.

Sounds good to me! I would suggest something useful for the science and technology museum. I.e. A raspberry pi which is wired up to accept button pushes, and then plays video/ audio recordings according to button presses.

I'm massively up for this – I think we should aim to keep it as simple and accessible for the first time and I like the idea of making a simple game. We can do something more advanced in future dojos if it's successful. Perhaps depending on numbers we could give a couple of options for simple games?

I say run with it, if Kieran you wouldn't mind doing the honours and setting up the Eventbrite and we'll start shouting a bit about it.

Remember to show the twitter account some love  - I think Dave's got the details, but  I can pass them onto whoever needs them if no one has them :)

Nice one for sorting stuff out.

Cheers,

Jamie.

I think I've misplaced the details :( Would you mind sending them on again to myself and Kieran?

Nice one. This should be fun. Just need to make sure that enough people bring laptops.

Do you want a list of suggestions for projects/games to try?

In December there was a guy (sorry I don't know his name) gave a show-and-tell on his battleship bot. Be cool if we could write bots to do battle. If people are interested I could google around to see if there's a framework of running the bots then in the dojo all we do is write the strategy part.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

Meetup on Thursday so get signed up! http://pythonnortheast.eventbrite.co.uk/

I bumped into Simon at the weekend and we both agreed that a text adventure with very limited scope would be the simplest thing for the Dojo because people would need minimal preparation. It'd be a great exercise for the beginners in printing text, reading input and constructing some simple logic and should be a lot of fun.

For future Dojos something like this might be quite fun: https://code.google.com/p/pybotwar/

Kieran, the decision rests with yourself, any thoughts?

Dave

On the night, I was hoping to get a few suggestions from whomever turns up and put the ideas to a simple vote. The text adventure game sounds like the first item on our list.

To throw another idea into the mix, I was thinking about a Countdown letters game solver - the user randomly selects 9 vowels and consonants, then the application suggests the best possible answers. This could include reading from a text file, making random selections, lists and sets.

(That robot wars thing looks like fun too)

Kieran.
