Dear all,

As I have noticed during the EuroScipy 2012  meeting in Brussels last week, some other colleagues do develop / are interested in Python. For beginners, Python is not always straightforward as the documentation, tutorials or material can be quite sparse over the Internet. For advanced developers, other problems might arise when trying to optimize a code, make it run faster, parallelize it, etc.

The IT dept' has set up a mailing-list for the OMA, pytho...@oma.be, in order to share knowledge among the people of the 3 institutes. We also have an archive for the mailing-list, stored on Google Groups for practical reasons (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!forum/python-dev-oma).

All persons willing to receive the Python-Dev mailing list can send an email to help...@oma.be. We suggest that the common language of the list would be English, but, of course, if not possible, don't hesitate to write to the list in French or Dutch to get help !

Once registered (=you receive a confirmation from help...@oma.be), I would like to invite you to send a mail to the list, summarising who you are, what experience you have with Python, what are the things you are working on, etc. As an example, here is my intro:

**
I'm geologist / seismologist at the ROB
Started coding in Python in 2005
I use Py to develop scientific applications and algorithms, mainly :
  • the routine seismic waveform analysis tool (client-server application, compiled to EXE on windows for seismo staff members).
    • Tools: Enthought's Traits, TraitsUI (wx & qt), Chaco ; obspy, numpy, scipy, socket, threading
  • heavy analysis of seismic noise data, by cross-correlation
    • Tools: Obspy, numpy, scipy, scikits.samplerate, sphinx documentation
  • mapping earthquakes and intensity informations
    • Tools: Matplotlib, Basemap, MySQLdb, jinja templates

**

I'd be happy to try to provide help for any of these modules/packages via pytho...@oma.be, so (once registered), don't hesitate to send to the list !!

Best regards,

Thomas

Dear all,

I'm a scientist at BIRA-IASB, and I'm working mainly on remote sensing of planetary atmospheres (Earth most of the time). Right now I am still occupied with the GOMOS instrument (stellar occultations) on ENVISAT. But we have already started a new science team that will be responsible for the retrievals and data processing of the ALTIUS hyperspectral imager that is under development here at BIRA-IASB.

I've been working for 15 years with Matlab and IDL. I have hardly any experience with Python, but would like to explore its possibilities. Perhaps it is a good candidate for the coding of the ALTIUS algorithms. To be confirmed of course...

Kind regards,
Filip
