When I did this, for apsw, pycrypto, and keyring, I found it most helpful to look at existing recipes, and try to figure out which of them would be most similar to the recipes I would need to write.

Build your package (the one you're writing a recipe for) by hand, first, so that you can see if you need to apply patches, and what the right environment variable settings will be.
