A couple of times a day I take them out of their yard and we graze in
different spots on the property (lots of grass and vegetation!). I have
two older, experienced dogs, Pierre and Eureka, that are well trained and
have terrific instincts so they are getting the most work.
Our three year old, Pooka2, who is so keen she almost hyperventilates
while we sit and watch them graze, is also getting out with us. Despite
her keeness she is still sensible and considering I've not trained her at
all and her not knowing any "herding" words she is proving herself useful
with her enthusiasm for getting stuck in and moving the stubborn ones. She
just needs to learn which side of the sheep/flock to be on to be most
effective.
The youngest, Tryst, has only sat behind her fence to watch what the other
dogs are doing from a distance --live and learn. But, in the morning when
I let the sheep out of the barn the lambs run and jump with delight so I let
Tryst join me and she gets to chase the lambs in their play. I'm sure in
her mind she is thinking she's making them run :-)
