I tried to install pyqtgraph on ubuntu by choosing "ubuntu software center" as opener for the .deb file.

I was not worried by the initial "only if you trust orgin" warning and proceeeded to click install but when I goto a bad quality warning with these details...

Lintian check results for /home/larry/Downloads/pyqtgraph-dev-r218.deb:
Use of uninitialized value $ENV{"HOME"} in concatenation (.) or string at /usr/bin/lintian line 108.
E: python-pyqtgraph: wrong-file-owner-uid-or-gid usr/ 1000/1000
E: python-pyqtgraph: wrong-file-owner-uid-or-gid usr/lib/ 1000/1000
etc.

... I decided to seek advice rather than pig-headedly ignoring the warnings.

Any  words of comfort, anyone?

On reflection, I decided to just download the source instead. After extracting and moving pyqtgraph to ~/.local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, I was up and running without warnings. Nonetheless, feedback on the original issue will be appreciated.

Thanks for the report!

Looks like software center is using lintian to decide whether the .deb meets debian packaging policy (obviously it does not). I'm still a novice at building .deb packages, but I was able to fix the most egregious errors about permissions and ownership. The rest of the errors are a bit more nitpicky (improper description formatting, missing changelog file, etc.) and may not be fixed soon (or ever).

In any case, I believe these packages are safe to install.

Thanks for the clarification. With the changes you menationed, the installation would be less worrying.
