Set tick strings only

 I see in the AxisItems documentation that I am able to set the ticks explicitly. However, doing this for every value of x on the plot creates a crowd of labels that don't disappear as the plot is resized.

Is there a way to simply replace the displayed value of tick strings, but keep the spacing, etc the same?
