Hey, gang. I use python to teach intro to bioinformatics at Iowa State, and last month my son (5th grade, Gilbert Elementary) came home from school all jazzed about learning Python on Codeacademy.  We sat together and he was really pretty good first rattle out of the box!  He's totally into it.  For Christmas we got him this book: Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python (Sweigart).  He worked on it in the car all the way to TX and back over the holiday.  First time he got his 'guess a number' game to work, he actually screamed out loud.  He's loving it.

OK: enough back-story.  In Ames/Gilbert is there a club for kids learning Python?  I can't find much, and it seems like if he could find a group of kids working on this, it would be a great situation for him to make some like-minded friends and they could encourage each other.  I'd also be interested in summer camps in this general area.

Please help!  And thanks.
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

I am not aware of anything in Ames, but the library might have something. I know the Ankeny library has a lot of STEM related classes for kids, so hopefully the Ames library has something similar. If not, perhaps it would be worth suggesting it to them. I'm sure we could find some volunteers to get it started.

I'd ask these fine people who are mostly in Ames, some of whom even have children
