Updates to the replacement walker

FYI, last night I closed Issue #440 after committing fixes and tests that address all of the issues that we had discussed regarding the replacement walker.

Ideally, this would have been done in a PR to encourage a review of whether these fixes address everyone's concerns. But we haven't merged expr_dev yet.
