He is pretty much a combat character. With 6 attacks at S6 and his Monstrous Rending Claws, he will chew through most infantry and Bikers with ease. He may struggle a bit against tougher enemy units, but he will be wounding most vehicles and Monsters on a 5+, and the re-rolls to wound from the Monstrous Rending Claws means that you will be doing a fair bit of damage against such units in most cases, as well as having better odds of getting those 6+ to wound that make his attacks go through any armour and have flat 3 damage. He can actually do a surprising amount of damage against most common vehicles, especially if you can boost his strength to 7 or 8 (of which there are various means to do so in the codex).
Zagara was created on Char by Kerrigan, and the first broodmother to be created. She came to see the planet as a crucible for zerg evolution. She was originally a queen, but was mutated into a broodmother prior to the Second Great War by the Queen of Blades.
There are two strains- "hive" zerg (Kerrigan's swarm) and Primal zerg. Primals are actually independent creatures, with a pack social structure, and no hive mind. the hive zerg have NO individual initiative (except for certain higher strains [queens, certain infested terrans, possibly the defiler, overlord]) and just default to kill/eat similar to uncontrolled undead, maintaining just enough intelligence to recognize their own broodmates while they rampage (sometimes not even that much).
The Seraphs remember that when the Dark Lord's lifeless body tumbled down the Pyramid of the Lost, Samur begged the Father to crush the Dark Lord's life sphere. Samur saw that they could destroy the Dark Lord's very essence so that he would brood no more against the Father.
As a species, the darkspawn are asexual and unable to reproduce. This task is left to a specific form of ghoul, referred to as broodmothers. Captured female prisoners are infected with the taint and are force-fed darkspawn tissue and vomit. Those that survive this process undergo a horrific transformation and become massively swollen creatures that exist to breed more darkspawn.
The newborn darkspawn will inevitably fight amongst themselves and try to kill each other, possibly by instinct. This serves to weed out the weaker darkspawn. Occasionally one young darkspawn will be so much more powerful than the rest that it kills the entire brood. This darkspawn is called an alpha. They are generally taller, stronger and much more intelligent than the rest of their kind.[19][20] They also wear better armor.
