TVPaint Animation (also known as TVPaint, TVP, Bauhaus Mirage or NewTek Aura) is a 2D paint and digital animation software package developed by TVPaint Developpement SARL based in Lorraine, France. Originally released for Amiga in 1991,[1] version 3.0 (1994) introduced support for other platforms.[2] In 1999, the last Amiga version 3.59 was released as free download.[3][4] TVPaint Animation currently runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android operating systems.

TVPaint Animation is a 2d bitmap animation software. It has been developed and commercialized by TVPaint Dveloppement since 1997. Founder Herv Adam, imagined TVPaint Animation to bring traditional looking animation to computer screens, by implementing paper techniques into a software.

TVPaint provides the most natural creative experience, just like drawing on paper, and grouping all the tools that a traditional animator needs at their disposal. It is an efficient tool, used in many studios around the world, taught in many schools, and has gained the rank of industrial standard in the animation world over the years.

TVPaint has long been applauded by its userbase for being intuitive, and providing a pleasurable user experience. This experience is supported by an engaged online community whose feedback helps developers to continue improving the software.

The eagerly awaited new edition of TVPaint Animation takes the software to new heights. The developers have worked to smooth out all of the user feedback on the earlier edition, and have also improved the compatibility and performance on ARM Macs.

  • Introducing the new Bitmap Rigging engine to create puppets and manipulate characters using our Puppet Layers in TVPaint Animation 12 Professional. It also allows the animator to automatically generate in-betweens between two key poses to save even more time.

With this new version, TVPaint aimed to offer a broader range of work possibilities. TVPaint was known to be used in feature films, but is now aiming to create series workflows, which means overcoming some of the previous bitmap-based limitations of the software.

To celebrate the crisp, new logo, TVPaint Dveloppement worked with artists from the TVPaint Community to create new imagery around a common theme. The collaborating artists were Ohfifteen, Leffiesart, La_graine_, Zacklydon, Animate_jack, Otaking77077, Kimarmalde and Bouchetloup.

To see TVPaint in action, check out the new tutorials on Youtube, which are now being presented under the TVPaint Masterclass label. These new tutorials are a guarantee of verified and approved content that will further help animators master the tool so they fully express their creative potential. The company plans to remake all of its earlier tutorials to adapt them to the TVPaint 12 standard.

Hi! I'm fairly new to animating digitally and I'm in shock and awe because of your incredible output! I've learned a bit on animating in Photoshop and Flash in my Digital Composite class but my work comes out less than stellar. What does TVP have to offer that those other programs don't because I'm interested in it? Also, I'm not that great in AE either because I haven't learn much about it. Do you have any tips on lighting and panning? Thanks!

Hi there! I just wanted to ask you something about inbetweening! You know how traditionally you can take your sheet off the pegbar and line it up with the previous frame to make sure it's all the same in terms of size, etc, is there any way to do that in TV Paint? As in, move the image you're working on around without messing it up? That usually also involves rotating the bottom, finished image, and if I do that in TV Paint it messes up the quality of the line a bit.. Thanks in advance!!!

I seem to remember having trouble importing transparent PNGs into TVP a while ago and just composited them in using After Effects. It was just painted foreground stuff so I traced a proxy of what it was and animated using that so I knew where it would be when I added it in later.

Is there a way to import a range of frames that are NOT named sequentially? I have my frames named by their frame number but this is not always even, and TVpaint (10) will only import them in chunks and is skipping frames here and there which is very annoying. I don't wish to rename my frames because I need to know where to put them on the timeline. I just want to have all my images loaded onto a layer so I can do the timing myself. Thanks!

hello i have a quick question for you, when your animating dialogue lip sync. do you animate the mouth shapes on ones or twos. The reason I ask is because am having a hard time trying to get the mouth shapes to sync up good. But I've been told you don't need to animate every single mouth shape.

It's definitely possible to animate your lip sync on twos. As a general rule for lip sync, if it's not syncing up try moving your frames one or two frames ahead of the sound. You also should focus more on the general mouth shapes and not animate every single sound you hear in each frame, otherwise your animation will be popping all over the place. Say the dialogue out loud yourself and pay attention to what your mouth is doing and what shapes it's making! You can read more about it here:

Hi! This is a bone-head question, I'm sure. But like a lot of things in TVP, simple things are just not intuitive to me. So, my question is: how can I reorder frames in a layer? Example: I have frames 1, 5, 9, and 13. How would I move frame 9 in front of frame 5, so that the new order would be 1, 9, 5, 13? *Sigh* I can't seem to drag a frame beyond it's front or back neighbor. It just bumps into it and stops.

Hi I have a question. I want to get into TVpaint but I don't understand how to do a paying background! How do you do it? Or can I just make the backgrounds static and then export the film to flash and then pan the background there? And in After Effects or flash, if you open up a TVpaint film, does is show the layers or not? Sorry for all these questions, I just wanna know how to pan a background!

...is set to progressive because it caused me a major headache in school when we were learning how to do panning backgrounds and I kept getting all these weird gross lines in mine. You're gonna have one project for your main animation (a walk cycle or whatever) and another project with your background, with the width and height set to however big that image is. Import your bg into that one.

Then you're gonna wanna open Windows > FX Stack Panel in your main animation project window. Go to Add FX > Motion > Keyframer. Go to the Render tab, and where it says "Source", go down to "project list" and choose your bg. Probably a good idea to save it if you plan on coming back to this. Then go back to the position tab and go to the frame where you want your pan to start and click the little C here to make a keyframe:

Move your bg to where you want it by dragging the arrows next to X (horizontal) and Y (vertical), then go to where you want your pan to end, click C again to make another keyframe and drag your bg to make it pan. When you scrub through the timeline you should be able to see it move now.

Now that I've said all that, this is all well and good for simple bg pans and stuff, but I try to limit how much I use the FX stack because you have to apply the FX and it'll make those effects permanent. If you want to change something you have to go in and redo them so I prefer to save as much of that for After Effects as I can. AE doesn't recognize TVP layers but you can export your animations with transparency so that you can bring them in that way.

im trying to copy and paste my keyframes from another program into tvpaint and i cant find a way to do this; this seems like it would be a simple thing to and like i have to be overlooking something. how do you paste things into tvpaint?

Hi, I was wondering if TVP allows the canvas to rotate, as you can in Photoshop. Also, I'm really picky about having a sparse gui, and TVP's looks very intimidating and confusing. Is it possible to customize things and display only those tools and spaces that you want?

Also you would definitely benefit from building a custom panel, you can put lots of things in there like your favourite brushes, erasers and even actions. The only panels I ever have up are the main panel, colour picker, tool options, layers, light table, navigation, and my custom panel with everything else. I talk about the custom panel here under Brushes: -basics
