I mentioned this last night, a cheap standing desk that sits on top of
a standard desk. It's a great way to try a good-looking standing desk
without committing and without spending much money – about $30 in
parts from Ikea and hardware (nuts, bolts, washers). The only tool
needed is a drill, although a drill-press makes for a neater job.

The original idea, with assembly instructions:
http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dollars.html

Mine uses bolts (#10 x 3.5”) instead of screws, with wing nuts &
fender washers, since the legs are made of square pressboard tubing
(strong vertically, not so strong horizontally, e.g. when squeezed in
the middle). 3” bolts might be OK if they have flat heads – the
brackets have counter-sunk holes. I could only find round head bolts,
so I used small washers on the front so the bolt heads would sit
right. Also, I drilled 5 sets of holes for adjustment.

A user’s perspective, with some good ideas:

I use an anti-fatigue mat from Menard’s, $15 (4 colorful interlocking
squares, 2x1 stacked 2 high). Definitely not as good as the one the
above article recommends, but cheap.

(Cheap is important to me, as I may have to leave this behind when my
project ends and I return to Montreal.)

Thanks for sharing David. That's the same video I saw this past week too!

Although, they are pricey (around 1k) - I've heard good things about
http://www.geekdesk.com/ if you want to desk that electric adjustable.
A good friend of mine, Matt, has one and swears by a GeekDesk and the
Embody chair by Herman Miller.

I guess it depends on how long you want the thing to last or how many
times you want to move it.

At home I went with this solution:

It's not as expensive as the geekdesk, handles 350 instead of only 275 lbs. and I put my own top on it, which looks better and has a better form factor than the tops you get from the manufacturer.

Being able to change from sitting to standing allows me to keep a clearer head throughout the day. You feel more comfortable and you really can jack in and out of your work quicker. I think it just makes you more alert overall.

David I'm planning to do the Ikea desk thing at my job, where I can't control the furniture.

Thanks for the option -- I've been eying a GeekDesk, but I need to look

The new GeekDesk Max handles 325lbs now.

Nick, you might look at the Kangaroo desktops -- they sit on top of your
current desk and then you can use it as a sitting desk or adjust it up
for a standing desk.

Any advantages to a single column desk versus a two legs?

Notice the wheels? It's very portable.
