Hi Peter

We are working on a book on scientific image acquisition and processing using Python. We are using scipy, numpy and scikits extensively.  Along the way, we learnt a few things about these tools.  I would like to present the issues and some solutions as well.

Ravi--great! That sounds like a great topic; I can't wait to see what you've done. Mind if we put you up first?

I talked to some folks at last nights meeting, so here's what I have for presenters so far:

1. Image Processing using Scipy, Numpy and Scikits - Ravi
2. Pandas - Brian
3. Interfacing with other languages (R, SAS, Octave, etc) - Kevin
4. ???
5. ???

I know there were a few others that were tentative--let us know if you'll be able to present.

Other potential topics include but are not limited to: IPython (& Notebooks), matplotlib/other visualization libraries, HDF5, Numba, or data lunging/crunching in general.

Looking forward to July's meeting already!

I can tentatively volunteer to talk on signal processing
simulation performance with pypy.  I might have a conflict
(assume the July meeting is on the 11th?) on the second
Thursday.

Chris

Sounds great Chris -- we'll put you down as tentative for now.  Let us know if you can do it.

1. Image Processing using Scipy, Numpy and Scikits - Ravi
2. Pandas - Brian
3. Interfacing with other languages (R, SAS, Octave, etc) - Kevin
4. Signal Processing Simulation Performance with PyPy - Chris Felton (tentative)
5. ???

I assume we use Scipy as short-hand for Scientific Python
and not necessarily the scipy package, correct?  Just a small
point of clarification for others that it is not limited to specfically
scipy package content (e.g. someone mentioned numba, any
takers?).

Yes, I believe Kevin and I talked about July as Scientific Python.
Thanks for the clarification Chris.

I would like to present on using python for geospatial work.  Most likely spatial operations on vector features.

David.

Sounds like a great preso David!

1. Image Processing using Scipy, Numpy and Scikits - Ravi
2. Pandas - Brian
3. Interfacing with other languages (R, SAS, Octave, etc) - Kevin
4. Signal Processing Simulation Performance with PyPy - Chris Felton
(tentative)
5. Python for Geospatial Work - David Fawcett

Maybe one more in case Chris can't make the meeting?

Thanks for the great meeting yesterday!

If you are still open for another talk at the July meeting I would be
happy to demo the IPython Notebook, Matplotlib and FiPy.

IPython Notebook, shown at the last meeting, is a browser based
interactive Python shell similar to the Mathematica notebook.

Matplotlib is a 2D plotting library that is built on top of NumPy and
provides MATLAB-like plotting.

FiPy is a Python based Finite Volume PDE solver.

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, Yes, Yes... seems to be a good fit! Looks like July's meeting is
full for presentations. @Chris, let us know your tentativeness.

The order below is in no particular order. Crowd-source ideas on a the
best order (if any). Please advise thoughts.

1. Image Processing using Scipy, Numpy and Scikits - Ravi
2. Pandas - Brian
3. Interfacing with other languages (R, SAS, Octave, etc) - Kevin
4. Signal Processing Simulation Performance with PyPy - Chris Felton
(tentative)
5. Python for Geospatial Work - David Fawcett
6. IPython Notebook, Matplotlib, Fipy - Jason Furtney

@Peter I am a go, I will be able to make the July meeting
and give the talk.

Chris

this was kind of interesting.

decorators at the last meeting and sci stuff at the next.

"And though I've seen similar things for months, I'm still incredibly impressed by the results enabled by Numba: a single function decorator results in a 1300x speedup of simple Python code. I'm becoming more and more convinced that Numba is the future of fast scientific computing in Python."

Peter,

Small update, instead of focusing on signal processing
with pypy, going to make the talk more general:

   "scipy with pypy"

In this case scipy means the general topic of
scientific/numeric computing  and not the library.

Chris

Brian had to cancel his Pandas talk due to a work trip. However, we have
a great and full line for July!

1. Image Processing using Scipy, Numpy and Scikits - Ravi
2. Interfacing with other languages (R, SAS, Octave, etc) - Kevin
3. SciPy with PyPy - Chris Felton
4. Python for Geospatial Work - David Fawcett
5. IPython Notebook, Matplotlib, Fipy - Jason Furtney

Anybody have a preference or good idea for order? It's completely
random right now.

Hi,

Have we established an order for these? I would be happy to go first,
I can simplify my lightening talk to be more of an introduction to
NumPy and plotting in the IPython notebook. I am OK either way.

Thanks,
Jason

Jason, no set order. Your idea sounds like a good one. Let's do it!

If anyone is interested, I made my presentation from July
available here:
I added one slide :)
