For this review I grabbed an old 160GB 2.5" SATA hard drive that I've had in storage for years, tossed it in an external enclosure, and connected it to my MacBook Pro. I had heard that Stellar Phoenix was a fantastic tool for recovering lost, deleted, or corrupted partitions and I wanted to see how well it would do. I've had this particular drive for a long time now and it has been formatted dozens of times in the past. The first thing I did was examine the drive for lost, deleted, or corrupted partitions. I really didn't expect it to find much and was astonished to see over 22 volumes recovered! Next, I selected the oldest partition (64.23 GB NTFS) in the list and did an advanced scan for all files. I wanted to see what, if anything, could be recovered from a partition that had been overwritten 21 times.
I started with a "Quick Scan" and wasn't able to recover anything at all. Not a surprise. I didn't expect a quick scan to turn up much. Next, I did an "Advance Scan" and told it to recover all files instead of just photos. The advanced scan takes much longer and uses more RAM overall. Make sure you have enough hard drive space to store the recovered files because you're going to need it! The scan finished a little under four hours later, and when I examined the list of recovered files I was shocked to see tens of thousands of them waiting for me. Stellar's software had managed to recover close to 40 GB of data from what I had assumed was an unrecoverable partition. Once I got over the initial shock I started browsing what had been recovered. The folks at Stellar have done a great job with the built-in file browser. It shows everything by file type (Audio, Video, Image, Text, etc.) and then further breaks down the list into individual file types (MP3, JPG, TXT, MOV). Looking for MP3 files? Click on the Audio section and then on MP3 Audio and you'll find a list of every MP3 file that has been recovered. Additionally, I love the fact that I can click on the JPG file type and then see a small preview of every file. This feature saves me from having to recover all of those files and then sorting through what I want to keep and what gets trashed. The only thing that would make this better would be the ability to preview a selected file with the space bar and the Quick Look feature in OS X.
Conclusion
Stellar's Phoenix Mac Data Recovery 7.1 is one of the easiest ways I've found to recover your lost data. For $99.00 you're getting a fantastic application that can reliably recover data from corrupted partitions and volumes that have been lost for years. It's astonishing how much data this app can actually recover. Up until now I've done things the hard way by using command-line applications like ddrescue, testdisk, and photorec. These are all fine applications, and they all recover data well enough, but none of them can compare to Stellar's offering when it comes to ease of use and the overall amount of data recovered.
