Hi Ma'am

How are you?

I got a very interesting forward about a project involving a 16mm film camera. It seemed to call out CommE. Not many film courses today actually use film anymore, and the person heading the project is specifically looking out for women to be part of it. I'm not sure how the timeline fits with the course, but I think it would be a really great experience for someone who intends to join the film industry.

Anyways do have a look. And if anyone is interested they can mail Bernd at fi...@gmx.de

Regards,
Malavika

Dear Malavika,

Okay, before you start thinking that I might be some creepy guy, let me first reveal why I’m looking for women right now:
I have done a lot of location hunting in Bombay in the past, often alone,
sometimes with male - and then a few times with female assistants,
and that made a huge difference, it was always much easier to convince people to let us shoot.

So right now I have three guys confirmed, and it would be really great to have a woman on board.
Let me tell you a bit about the project itself:

I got invited by Max Mueller Bhavan and Experimenta Film Festival for the bangaloREsidency.
In the beginning I was told that I can work with students from Srishti,
but later it turned out that they are not available, since they have to focus on their studies.
So now I have to hire people but I have a really low budget for that.
But that doesn’t mean there is no budget, I will pay something of course.

Anyways, there’s another benefit: We will shoot on 16mm film, and before we start the work,
I will conduct a 5 day workshop and teach everyone in the team how to handle a Bolex H16 camera,
16mm film and a light meter. So in the end every person should go home with some analogue film experience.
The workshop will take place at Srishti.
Your showreel says you worked with 35mm already, so I’m not sure whether this workshop can be a benefit for you at all...

The whole thing is a 5 week commitment, full daytime shifts, 5 days a week,
sometimes, if the situation demands it we might also work over hours. Weekends are off.
We won’t have a driver, we’ll go on the cheapest vehicle, which may be: by foot, by bus, by metro, rickshaw or taxi (in this order)
About the work: This film is so small, there is no need for hierarchies, and actually I don’t want them.
Ideally, anyone can do anything at anytime. We should all meet on eye level.
But I don’t wanna hear stuff like “this is not part of my job..."

The film will be only interiors of shops, nothing else. I will tell you about it when we speak.
So it’s a very visual, technical film, there won’t be any human interaction in the frame, and no sound.

Here’s the rough schedule:
Sep 04- 08 16mm camera workshop
Sep 11- 15 location hunting & recce
Sep 18- 22 location hunting & recce
Sep 25- 29 shoot
Oct 02- 06 shoot

I will take a train (to avoid x-rays) to Bombay on 7th Oct and get the films developed and scanned at Filmlab in Goregaon.
Crew members who want to see a filmlab from the inside and follow the scanning process, can come to Bombay at their own cost.
I will make sure that they get a proper insight into the forgotten world of celluloid film production.

The final film will be presented in November in Bangalore as part of the Srishti intermediate semester exhibition.

Hi,

Got your contact through Subuhi, she said you are looking for a kannada speaking crew for an experimental film to be shot in Bangalore.

I'm a trained cinematographer, currently residing in Bangalore. Your project sounds very interesting and would love to be a part of it, could you tell me a little more about your project and what exactly your looking for in your crew?

Thanks & Regards,
Malavika Mandalappa
