I myself am a Lupus patient who has suffered severe organ damages and I hope that, through events like this, more people will be educated about the disease, aiding early diagnosis and better healthcare.
What is Lupus?
Lupus or SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage ANY part of the body including skin, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart, brain, joints and blood. It can be life-threatening and lead to disabilities. 1 in 1000 people in India have Lupus, 9 out of 10 are women. It is incurable and has no known cause. Treatment is expensive and needs lifelong medication. Yet there is not enough awareness which often leads to delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, causing further damage to organs.
The Lupus Trust India was established last year by Lupus patients mainly to support patients who live below poverty line (BPL). It facilitates treatment and rehabilitation. The trust is also committed to providing psychological, social and emotional support to individuals and families affected by Lupus.
I have attached a poster of the walk and also a brochure of Lupus Trust India to help you understand more of what the trust aims to do.
Looking forward to seeing you at the walk!
Thank you.
Warm regards,
Suzanne Sangi
