How to compile a single DICOM volume from a set?

I'm just getting started using dicom-handling software so this may be very simple, or otherwise naive. I have a set of files corresponding to a single scan (img0001.dcm, img0002.dcm, etc.) which I want to compile into a single volume. Moreover the reader I need to use doesn't understand DICOMDIR files at the moment. Can anyone tell me how to pack these 2D files into a volume (in a .dcm file)?
